You have a lot of sludge there for it to be just the EGR coolers. However, you can check the condition of the coolers by removing the corrugated pipes between the EGR valve and the throttle body. (And blanking plate if fitted)

This will expose the EGR valve itself, if it's wet in there the cooler has failed, Thumbs Up

You can just bypass the coolant hoses on the EGR valves it's not ideal but good enough to run for a month and see if it continues

Oil in Radiator expansion tank

So this problem continues.
I had the oil cooler replaced a while back after the initial discussions and advice I got on here.
However, the problem is still there.
I took it back to the garage who did some more diagnostics, see picture of report below.
I’m now at the stage where I hope it could be the EGR coolers as originally expected ( until the garage said it was oil cooler) as opposed to anything more serious / expensive.
Could anyone advise or have any further experience to go forward with.

Add, I made the error of taking it to my local garage, who I trust and have used for a long time, but, who are not LR specialists. 1. It cost me a lot more as the job took them a lot longer, and 2. It seems they may have changed the wrong part… and 3. They then charged me to look at the problem that they didn’t fix!!!

I am booked in at a local LR specialist week after next for them to work their magic.
Any thoughts / advice welcomed.

Anyone had this scenario that can share an opinion?
Desperately hoping it isn’t going to be a problem deep in the heads..

1. The only sensible approach is to blank the EGR. (if not done already) (you can get cheap kits on ebay). You may need to fit this yourself as the garage maybe reluctant. You could avoid removing the butterfly at this stage and accept it maybe lumpy at low revs.

2. Disconnect the EGR coolers from the coolant system. You may need to buy a piece of hose for this or one of the existing EGR hoses maybe able to be used.
Flush out the oil from the existing cooling system.
The radiator will need to be flushed with hot water and left over night to drain

Then use the car and see if it returns badly.
Note coolant gauge may read lower the previously.

N.B You are doing step 1 to avoid hot EGR gasses melting the plastic cam cover.

You any good working on the tools? I think you may need to learn the basics!

I certainly wouldn't waste money on EGR cooler replacement as I think its likely to be something else.
But the above is easy to try to rule out.

This grey thing center of picture is the coolant temp sensor.
The pipes going out left and right goto the EGR coolers. These need disconnecting.
And then one of the pipes used to make a direct loop from left to right to keep the engine water tight.

Thanks for the really detailed reply. It actually has the EGR’s blanked, will this process to check still work?

Hi @Bubblehead what was it in the end? Did you get a resolution? Where did you take it and how much did it cost you in the end? I have slightly similar issue (although the oil in my expansion tank is very light, so I'm thinking mine is at a very early stages). I thought it was diesel at first, but a local mechanic is convinced it's engine oil as it's much darker and thicker than diesel. At the moment it's a few floating globules, which are starting to form a line the top of the coolant tank.
The engine has done 130K and has not had any major work done on it to date.

Oil cooler.
My recommendation would be to get it looked at sooner rather than later as the whole cooling system will get contaminated with oil and it was take a serious amount of flushing to get rid of it. I’m still get very slight remnants appearing in the expansion bottle now.

Price wise, I made and error here and didn’t take it to a specialist, I ended up paying a hell of a lot more than I should have because it took them so long to do.
IIRC, the part was about £200, then I think at a specialist, you should be looking at a few hundred labour costs on top.

After the job was done, and a fair few miles later I was still getting oil appearing so took it back, they then told me it was the head gasket and tht the whole engine would need to be stripped…

I took it to a specialist and they did a full investigation and concluded that it was oil clearing out of the hoses that was appearing in the expansion and that all was fine .
Done many many miles since and it has not been a problem since.

Take it to a specialist, not any other garage is my advice!
