"Rated" recovery points

I did the second of four 4WD Training Courses offered by Eureka 4WD Training here in Perth (beginner, Sand, Bush, Advanced; excellent day out up along the power line tracks near Mundarring; great fun and the Disco was sensational - esp on muddy down hill tracks! I want to do the Advanced course and was told I would need two rated recovery points front and rear.....anyone here have such a set up? I have the standard "tow" point at the front and the Mitchell Bros tow bar at the rear. I'm adding the ARB Bull bar next weekend. Will it have two rated recovery points? What about the rear - will I need to add two additional points and where?
cheers
Chris

Confused The vehicle has (over) rated recovery points as standard ...why would you need anymore?

Oh I don't doubt it ...but rather an odd request. The ARB bars front or rear don't appear to include additional recovery points in the spec shown on their website. It maybe worth just clarifying the request as I can't think of many applications whereby the existing points aren't suitable.

I'd find a different training center they dont appear to be up with the times

That said its their training so their rules although that don't mean they are right / wrong (Many ways to skin a cat) and perhaps not too conversant with D3/LR3 recovery techniques

And how do they determine that a recovery point is "rated". Also "rated" to what? Having been in the training area, only an "engineer" can rate a recovery point. But in effect there is NO such thing. I don't know or any vehicle manufacturer or bull bar manufacturer rating a point for dynamic recovery. The "rating" is individual assessment.
I could be wrong as I haven't done any training recently to the current Australian Standards. I would be happy to hear from others regarding legalities of these assessments.

The "Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986" would determine a spec for this from LR in the UK ...but I can't find the figure at the mo Sad

Suffice to say that the following official video gives a good indication though Wink

I asked my dealer a few years ago about the recovery points front and rear, if they were for off road recovery, and he led me to the car manual. It doesn't actually say that they are for off road recovery, but then again, it doesn't say they aren't for off road recovery. Confused Does anyone really know? What is the official word? What are they actually rated at? I mean, I have been using them, but I am always a little bit cautious.

The ARB bull bar doesn't have recovery points due to the crush cans fitted for air-bag compliance. You could ask them if they can fit a modified set of recovery points to the mounting brackets - they seemed to think it was too hard when I asked them though Sad

According to the CCDA (Cross Country Drivers Association), you can have two each end - fitted with a minimum of 4 x 8mm high tensile bolts - or one fitted with 12mm bolts. But quite a few organisations will insist on two front, two rear. Apparently to do with insurance, although I've never actually seen where this is stated.

I had some made up and fitted to the chassis rails just to appease the scrutineers - in reality they're too impractical to use, as they're quite some distance from the ends of the vehicle.

Cheers,

Gordon

With the mitchel hitch you should get a tongue and shackle to place in the tongue receiver as it then pulls straight from the towing eye.
