Rattle under hard acceleration when cold

Hi guys

Little piece of mind needed. My new to me disco 4 on my60 with 51k on the clock seems to be quite noisy on medium acceleration when cold almost like a pink. Seems to quieten down after 4-5 miles.

Also noted it was a bit smokey when leaving a junction quickly.

Finally on start up it does puff out what looks to be diesel for a few seconds

Please tell me I have not bought a problem child Big Cry

Oh and. Went to wiggs and no fault codes registered

My own MY09 with 66k sounds pinky when ambient is below 6 c and im gojng above 30mph but after 2miles it normalises , I accept this as Normal but I don't have any smoke other than the FBH from the under the wheel arch as expected

Be a bit more sympathetic of the mechanicals - avoid harsh acceleration when cold. Simples!

I have a MY10 and I would say also a bit pinky sounding too when cold, I'm no mechanic but I would say fine.

Thanks guys maybe it's as is. Driving like miss daisy until hot seems to be the actions.

Been reading about the turbo drain tube. Might run it into the stealers in Manchester to have it checked out

Absolutely! If you want any type of engine to last, you should never give it loud pedal until fully warmed up. Even the latest synthetic oils need a little help. Neutral

Gentle driving from cold until needle start moving upwards and warm down gently from hot before turning off (let it idle for about 30 seconds).

I hate it on the odd occasion when I have to join motorway / fast road practically from cold Big Cry

As all of the above re being gentle when cold, but I have recently started using premium diesel and it appears for me anyway to make a difference to the "rattle" of the engine. My daily commute involves a short stretch from the house and then I have to join a dual carriageway not great really but what can you do. I found that even when fully warm the engine would rattle a bit if you gave it beans but since the change it seems much quieter.

Of course it could just be placebo or I could be going deaf......

I also use shell nitro for my Disco and it seems to keep everything clean. The EGRs were replaced by previous owner at 41,000. Now on 86,000 and so far no sign of any problems with them. However, I am leaning towards a blanking kit.

I would say its just an engine, drive it and dont worry.

The vast majority of car/van/truck drivers abuse their vehicles from the minute they turn the key and you dont hear of engines blowing up all over the country because of it.

Obviously if it starts to make a noise that wasnt there before thats a different kettle of fish.

I disagree. Driving hard when cold will not necessarily blow your engine up, but it will shorten it's lifespan. It depends on whether you intend keeping it for some time, in which case treat it with a little respect and it will go on for much longer before it starts to smoke due to wear.

I thinking coming from a highly strung performance engine, i cant bear to thrash the engine from cold. With my previous S54 BMW M power engine, i wouldn't rev it past 3k (it went unto 8k) until the oil temperature was up to 90 degrees. Its was also worth noting that the oil temperature lagged significantly behind the coolant temperature warming up, but not sure how the TDV6/SDV6 oil/coolant temp links.

I have ordered an IID tool, so hopefully will be able to have a look at the live values for a comparison.
