Rattle at slow speed

A prominent rattle/vibration has started whenever the car (2014 D4)is in D and the foot brake is applied. It is intermittent but happening more and more. When you take your foot off the brake and let the car move forward again the rattle starts. I know this is a diesel but this definitely isn’t just the engine sound.

Any thoughts very much appreciated.

Idea Is it a 'tinny' rattle from underneath? - Heatshields are prone to coming loose if a nut corrodes around the aluminium fixing.

Is it a suspension rattle as you go over uneven (even slightly) ground? could be, ARBs, Drop links, or if you drive slowly and 'dab' the brakes, a clonk can signify lower arm rear bush wear.

Just a few ideas, hard to say from your description, mileage etc Thumbs Up

Many thanks for your reply and thoughts on what it might be.

It’s a D4 HSE Lux 2014 (64 plate) with 37k miles on the clock.

Will check for any lose bits of trim and will check the suspension. The sound seems to be coming from the engine bay, possibly near the driver’s side. It is a slight grinding noise but stops at about 20mph.

To add: it only happens when the car is in D. It’s fine when in Park or neutral.

Confused Not sure about that, if you lightly touch the brakes does it affect the noise? Its a relatively new car with low miles so I would have thought unlikely about my previous suggestions but 'could' be brakes related, is it out of warranty? Question

The sound occurs when I do one of the following:

Lift off the brake and coast forward
Gently apply the brake to slow down
Come to a stop
Stopped in traffic in D with foot on brake

Best way to describe the sound: imagine if you move off in a manual car in second or third gear rather than first. It is that sort of vibration but with a rattle on top. Seems to be an engine or gearbox issue rather than brakes but could be wrong.

Hopefully still under warranty. Usually the big problems start the second The warranty runs out!

This rattle is on both of our D3's. I also believe its from the heat shield vibrating from being a bit lose. If you put it in Neutral its not heard or the rattle is very low and sometimes you don't hear it at all, but mainly when you stop and foot is on the brake and in drive position. I once heard it of a D4 when a guy was idling next to me. I told him "you hear the rattle, put the car in N" and the rattle went away. Have them tighten the heat shield, once it gets a bit loses again it will come back. Like the rattle of the rear side passenger seatbelt against the side of the car. If you don't want to hear it put the car in N on red lights or on long stops.

Thanks very much. Sounds like this could be the issue. Easy to fix I presume?

I had them tighten it on our LA D3 after a day of driving it was back. LOL

Thanks BiffSun and SafariDave. It was the heat shield which had bent and was vibrating on the exhaust pipe.
