Evening all,
Can anyone tell me what the official book time should be to replace both rocker covers on a SDV6? The garage has given me a quote of £3327.92 inc vat for all the works. Their quote states the following -
£800+vat for the body removal
£200+vat to remove the starter motor and find it wasn’t leaking from the rear crank main seal.
£481.60+vat for parts
£1350 labour which isn’t justified....he tells me it’s a £3000 job to do the rocker covers with the body still in place and would take 8 hours each cover so total 16 hours according to the book! I just find this hard to believe as the body is already off of mine so how long should it realistically take from this point to remove and fit the new rocker covers, not including the refitting of the body? £1350 doesn’t add up to me...

I’ve just had both my inlet manifolds replaced this week with genuine LR ones. They did it with the body on and I was advised it’s a day and a half to do . That said I think that part of what I had done was circa £1300 all inclusive and included new injector seals and a new oil scavenge pipe that runs between the two.
I used a well respected independent near me. I’m sure I could have got it done cheaper but I know it is a pig of a job and they do good work.

It does seem like an excessive amount, I have asked him to justify his time in the quote, but as he has already started the works, I am concerned that his figure is final unless I can play the card that his timings are unjust...

Afternoon all, it’s all beginning to look rather bad regarding the discovery. Thought I was getting a phone call this morning to say the rocker covers are now replaced and all is good...sadly not. After finishing the job they said they had it running and all was well until they revved it up and oil started pouring out of the front crank seal! The garage said it must be pressurising and after fixing the leak at the top it’s now decided to push out the bottom! The engine ran sweet before despite the leak so wouldn’t see why it would pressurise the crank case? Anyone have any thoughts on it please? The garage seem to have had enough and just said we will our a new seal in it and then you should contact we buy any car as the engines probably about to let go! after all this money spent!

Ask them to have a look at the crankcase oil separator / breather at the back of the engine. If its blocked will cause back pressure. They should have checked this when the body was off 2 min job yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Thanks for that, I have asked them to check that but have said they will barely be able to check it now the body is back on. He has told me he will put a new seal in it tomorrow and then I need to drive it carefully to get it home so it doesn’t do it again...I literally have no confidence in this vehicle at all now! Why would it otherwise push the seal out? It was half hanging out when the crankshaft hub was removed...I just hope it’s really bad coincidence, but the pump is only about two months old fitted by previous owner

Well its a bit of a pig to get the breather / separator out now but should be doable. If you remove the oil filler cap with the engine at idle you should be able to tell if there's too much pressure escaping. I'm wondering if it might be turbo related, but right now I can't think of what else might be causing the problem other than a completely knackered engine.

The garage rang last night and said with the new seal installed it’s all been run up and all good, so he may have scare mongered me into believing it was worse than it is! Despite this the missus has been so upset by the whole situation she just wants to see it gone and get something else. So if you want a good condition 4 with little over 100,00, she’ll be on eBay for £12500

Really sorry you've had such a horrid introduction to Discovery ownership, certainly not helped by an incredibly expensive garage. I fully understand why you want to bail out.
Such a shame you didn't have a honeymoon period where you could fall in love with it before the 'love/hate' relationship begins. I unfortunately am too far down that road and am addicted...I have a D2, D3 & D4 so there's no hope for me! Stu

Yeah I agree with Oswiperus, its a real shame you are reduced to losing faith in the car, not to mention your hard earned cash due to the exorbitant workshop charges.
I am guessing the garage was not a LR specialist / indy, would that be correct?yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

It is a massive shame, it seems the perfect vehicle for us and could from here be faultless, but we don’t feel we can keep a vehicle that a garage has made us loose faith in, though I don’t believe him entirely as every day his theory on it seems to change. The engine could be absolutely fine from here but he has just installed the lack of confidence in us so much so that we would worry every time we drive it....we like to do a lot of touring holidays and just don’t think we could go away happy in it as nicer vehicle it still is... It is anindependent Land Rover specialist that has won many awards which is also why I’m so shocked it’s made him scratch his head and just chase his own tail. Read cam seal is a fairly common thing as is the front crank seal...so why create such a big fuss over “the engine must be on its way out”??? It doesn’t smoke, runs beautifully...
