Well it was clear before he started the rear seal was not the issue, as the oil was draining down the outside of the transmission from the top. That problem should have been diagnosed with a borescope camera or similar without removing the body. A specialist indy implies in depth knowledge and experience of the marque, which is supposed to benefit you the customer, and without dealership style pricing.

TBH I think I would be having a discussion with Trading Standards

Although there are some differences in the top end layout on the 2.7 D3 and the D4 with 3.0 its not massive, mine was around 11 hours to change both rocker covers and fit a new throttle body remove the butterfly and blank the EGRs. new rear belt whilst it was all apart and reassemble Oh and fit a new washer pump.

Surely if he had smoke tested the inlets he would have seen the leak
 Must stop buying shiny toys....

They had options other than resorting to body off, Its hard to know which ones they employed, if any.

And then after all that questions remain as to whether the problem has been correctly rectified. I'd certainly be pushing back very hard on his pricing and the justification of body removal.

So had the phone call today to say it’s all back together ready to be collected. I asked him what he found after asking him to confirm it was definitely pressurising....he just said “yeh definitely pressurising, spoke to a mate and he knows these engines, says it’s probably a cracked head, so yeh definitely get rid of it”. I couldn’t believe that again he had done little diagnostics of his own and has just condemned my engine through doubt and what his mate said on the phone! I said so if it’s pressurising what’s stopping the seal blowing out and leaving me stranded on my journey home tomorrow? He said, I’ve modified it - in drilling a little hole in the back of the filler cap so it can vent, so will be safe to drive. I can’t believe it!!! Now I’m just left to go and pay the Land Rover “specialist” (who knows how they won all their awards), with no official diagnosis of whether my engine is good or bad!

Have to say, the more this is going on the more I think you have been led a merry dance!! Next they will be saying they will buy it off you at scrap value. Who is the indy? Sounds like a right p**ss taker!

I know, I feel pretty stupid over it all. Though I thought I was doing the right thing initially by avoiding a main dealers labour rates but second best take it to a specialist who would do a good thorough job. How wrong I was...

You did nothing stupid and if there is a label to be applied it should perhaps be directed at those you engaged to carry out the repairs. It's easy at this remove to be critical or even unfair toward an establishment based only on the comments you have posted here. That said, as I understand it you asked them to (1) diagnose an oil leak, and (2) rectify same, of which it now seems clear they have failed on both in terms of a satisfactory result, as well as an acceptable cost burden on you.

Based on your posts, the first failure appears that they "dived in" with a misdiagnosis instead of completing proper tests to support their suspicions. Done correctly this should have provided them some degree of coherent direction.
The second failure, (rectifying the problem) is a direct result of the first!
Given that they as yet have failed to "properly" diagnose or repair the fault, this is unsurprising and pretty much inevitable.

It smacks of incompetence to me, or at the very least lots of "clutching at straws", and you are now expected to "foot the bill" for the resulting unnecessary labour/parts and/or unsatisfactory repairs.

I would be having a serious chat with them at the very least, and asking them for justification their costs based on what is obviously (A) Failure to diagnose correctly in the first instance, (B) Leading to an unreasonable financial burden placed on you. (C) Uncertain outcome of repairs/failure to rectify fault as requested.

I know how you are feeling. I had similar experiences with two D3s. Happily i got a years use out of each before the sagas began.
I had had enough, not of the D3 or the spending of a good wedge each time, but because I was so miserable dealing with so called professionals that the longer it went on the more cowboy they became. I was so Censored off with the waits, non call backs, delays, and Censored that we had, it was easy to get rid and walk away at that point

We then bought a VW Touareg altitude 3.0 tdi v6 and found it was fantastic,,,,,,,but not a Land Rover.

8 months in to Touareg and the fuel pump ate itself sending swarf around the engine taking out the injectors etc. Same saga and Censored with a VW ‘specialist’. Fixed it up paid the bill through gritted teeth and perfect for 12more months

Motto of the story, sometimes Censored happens, but you sounded pretty upbeat about becoming a D4 owner at the start, so do what you need to do now but definitely consider buying another, just find a decent Indy or get a good warranty or both. They are great cars despite their faults

Ps it took me 18mths to forget the LR sagas, but now back in a RR, (with a warranty😂)

Also the post above this one is a very well written description of events which i would be printing off and confronting your Indy with before paying the bill👍

Thank you all for your responses, it makes it easier hearing others stories and hearing helpful suggestions. I collected the vehicle last night having been told it was all done and good to go. Drove it home - drove very well. Went out this morning to have a look and saw one droplet of oil hanging off one of the bolts that holds the belly plate on. I removed them and was met with the familiar wash of oil accumulated at the rear of the engine. Revved the engine and oil starting leaking out the bottom of the bell housing, exactly the same state as I took it to him in! Not only am I £3000 odd lighter, it’s in exactly the same state I took it in as! Big Cry Big Cry

You might also place a post on here asking members to recommend a good indy near you who can diagnose the problem correctly.

Members on here will steer you to the right place, with the correct diagnosis and advice. You are then armed for any forthcoming interaction / litigation.

You are going to have to get it sorted as you can't sell it as is. Don't be "put off" just be diligent in your approach and possess a firm resolve to get the right outcome. Thumbs Up

Today the garage removed the gearbox and confirmed the rear crank seal is leaking and it’s a pattern part that is currently fitted...he’s going to fit genuine tomorrow. I asked him if he can check the oil separator easier now the gearbox is out, but was told he still can’t access it. As long as he rights the oil leak for me at no further cost as that’s what I paid for in the first place. I will have a go at removing the separator myself and cleaning it when I get the vehicle back.

Well that's new, there was no oil there previously!!(inside the bellhousing) So is this another seal being pushed out due to excess crankcase pressure?

They have already confirmed to you that they believe there is an issue with crankcase pressure. Which is why they stupidly drilled a hole in the oil cap to mitigate the problem. Well that obviously did the trick Rolling Eyes

They need to diagnose what's causing the crankcase pressure they reported earlier.
