Rear Cross Member Question
Hello
I was switching tow bars earlier and noticed that the rear cross member, particularly the side of the spare wheel is very rusty. I managed to get the screw driver through.
The other side, with the sockets and tow eye is solid.
Am I right in thinking the rear is just a thin patch piece?

Which cross member are you talking about? Your reference points are in the middle. Do you mean the rear most cross member vs the one in from of the spare wheel, which the diff lives in?
Any pics? Or point to where the rust is using my pic.

Hi
Its the rear cross member, right between the holes for the tow electrics. Ive drawn on your pic
Im finding now a lot of the older ones have rust on the very rear of the rear cross member. The metal seems very thin.
EDIT: I should add that the metal in the cutout for the tow sockets is solid.MY2023 Discovery 5 R-Dynamic 3.0

Ah yeh I see. Sorry your first post makes sense to me know. It is thin there. I was lucky, no rust at all, dunno why not but won't complain.
The rear bumper isn't too bad to take off. Might be worth trying to prevent it getting any worse but I wouldn't poke it any more.
When I did my entire chassis, wire brush back to metal, I used and got on very well with Bilt Hamber hydrate 80. 2 coats with a nights rest in between and then 90% zinc primer finishing with Dinitrol 4941.
Failing that, replace it.

thanks
Shall give it a clean up and a paint. My first thought was that it cant be too important as its so thin around there.
A friends has the same issue but further along the member.MY2023 Discovery 5 R-Dynamic 3.0

Well it's all part of it but if you've got a full tow bar like a tow trust one you should be alright regardless.
I'm no steel expert though and I can't remember how that member is constructed now. I'm sure that's the thinnest side of the 4.

Im guessing there is another piece running down the middle too which is used for the tow bar to mount too? and is what the sockets are mounted on.
