Hi CW

I have an S spec with locking rear.

When the rear is locked a graphic appears in the LCD below the speedo to show you the steering direction so that you know what front wheel angles you have on in difficult/slippery conditions.

The diff will lock fully if you select low range and then TR to rock crawl mode.

The dash will look like this

Activation of the rear locking diff does not bring that symbol on, it is only active when in a TR mode and the steering is not straight ahead, nothing to do with either locking diff

Pic of the rear diff actuator motor. Only fitted on those with active rear diff, so Saw's Land Rover contact was talking utter pony about it just needing to be enabled by the dealer. Unless "enabled" is shorthand for "replace CJB, wiring loom and goodness knows what else before chucking out the rear drivetrain and fitting this nice new one".

That picture looks familiar, it's my rear diff actuator probably the best option I went for. £495 in Dec 2005.

Here's a good video from Land Rover Experience showing what the rear diff lock is good for. Even comes with commentary!

I would like to know, what is that on top of the diff in Jonty's pic.
Could that be a different type of electronic traction device, does
not resemble a normal diff locking system I have seen Question
Cause I have that on my diff on a S model. Question Question Question

that is the diff lock actuator or E diff . if you have a look at the pic in chesters post you will see it is taken from behind the diff and the one in Roel's pics are from the right rear wheel arch. they are all the same diff. if you optioned it and have air and TR then yes.

catweasel thanks for the quick response, have air suspension and TR but
no sat nav fitted. Dash lay out the same as ianv would assume I have
this E diff and judging by the other pic's, the actuator ( drive motor ) seem to
be mounted in the same place for both types. So one could easily think you
have the diff lock, but have the E diff Big Cry instead. I must say this E diff
is a strange looking device with these spur gears, does it work like a limited
slip diff controlled by the TR. But no matter I still go where the yota's think
I wont go Mr. Green
