Rear difflock/e-diff is the same there is only one type. If you don't have it fitted you just have a standard open diff at the rear.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

CFB, I stand corrected, but I do have this fitted to the diff of my D3.
And there was no mention of this extra fitted when I purchased it, so it may
have been a STD fit for the SA " S " spec. Here is where I could use some
help.
Having read the posts on this I assumed that only those models fitted with
the sat nav screen, TR and air could be factory fitted with the diff lock.
So here I have a diff lock diff in a " S ", no sat nav, no indication in the
owners manual to tell me it is there, if it works and it is plugged in. No
mention of the screen as shown in ianv'spic, this comes up on mine in
low range too, or did LR run out of stock of the normal diff's on the
assembly line and go to plan B, to keep production going
Or did I get a working one
Have done a lot of off roading in low range and never seen a diff lock

I guess you have to assume it's fitted and working then (lucky man ) You can often feel the effect of it engaging on a slippery climb, as it locks up it almost feels as though someone gave you a little push from behind. Don't know if there is a technical way of confirming it's connected though.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

sat nav etc is not required for the diff to work. if you have the actuator you have the locking diff. I do not have satnav but have the locking diff.

I have Sat Nav and Locking Rear Diff but unfortunately I do not have the upgraded 4X4 Sat Nav options to see the symbols when the diffs activate.
This upgrade on the Sat Nav is the only option I regret not getting.
I thought the upgrade was more to do with the sound system more than 4X4 information.Arctic Frost Discovery 3 TDV6 SE, Active Rear Diff, Adaptive Head Lights, Tow Pack, Ebony Leather, Roof Rails, Mantec Guard. East,
In SA only the HSE has the display on the satnav screen, however all D3's have the air suspension and rear diff as standard.

Could this be the elusive diff lock icon on the " S "
As per pic of ianv.D3 bullbar-spots-roof rack with spots-ladder-long range tank-swing out spare wheel carrier- upgraded tow bar-dash console-internal water tank-duel awnings-drawer system & T T.
I can't believe how many people look at symbols on the dash not knowing what they mean and don't reach for the manual . . .
It's easy to see how urban myths start and wholesale misunderstanding. You lot do know what an oil warning light and other safety related stuff looks like don't you ?

Here's a good video from Land Rover Experience showing what the rear diff lock is good for. Even comes with commentary!
and i was asking if that was an option to all models, or on the hse was standard.
so without the option a normal disco 3 wouldn't be able to pass ?J.p

The locking rear diff is optional on all D3's, it's not standard even on HSE.
A 'normal' D3 would cope with this without any trouble, it would just use the brakes to stop the wheel in the air moving (traction control) and put the power to the wheels on the ground.Disco 5 HSE Lux

Jean-Paul, I believe the accepted belief is that the D3 will still get there without the e-diff, but the e-diff will do so with less effort and drama. The actions of the e-diff are simulated on non e-diff cars by the application of the brakes at individual wheels, and so this can halt a spinning wheel and so transfer power to the opposite one.
The e-diff isn't really a 'locker' at all, but is an infinitely variable limited slip differential under control of the computers. As a result of this, just enough bias can be loaded into the diff to allow a smooth getaway, something the use of on/off brakes cannot achieve. The e-diff never reaches 100%(the point at which both wheels turn at equal rates) and therefore never really locks at all. It does this so it can still sense which wheels have more traction.
In summary:
e-diff = smoother and quicker to find traction, more comfort, less effort.
non-e-diff = just as capable but less refined and wears out brake components quicker.Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
