Rear diff rebuild - looking for torque specs

Hi!

I'm putting in an ARB air locker and can't find torque specs for:
- ring gear bolts
- case bolts

Any info greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry I can't help, but I'd be interested to hear how you get on with it as it's something I'm thinking of doing.

If you put an air locker in the rear axle, do you have to disable the traction control?

Nope. Traction control simply works less. Same idea as the HD models with the electronic rear locker.

There are YouTube videos comparing the Disco 3 locked rear vs not if you want to check them out

Hi pwheeldon,

So far so good. Though the amount of info available is seemingly nonexistent.

I measured backlash off the pinion shaft before I took the old one apart to have something to match to. With the pinion in good shape, I decided to leave it be so I wouldn't have to mess with pinion depth. Good thing as shims are hard to come by over here.

With it back together, the backlash is much smaller. The ARB kit came with cover-side carrier bearing shims, but not case side which I need to add backlash. So, I have Dana 35 shims arriving tomorrow which I'm hoping will be close enough in diameter, otherwise I'll be ordering from the UK - easier for you Very Happy

I think I'm going to have to start doing some YouTube research duff rebuilds and air lockers on other cars, as pretty nothing made any sense to me! I know shims and pinions are, but no idea how they relate to the diff. Its nice to have something to learn, I guess!

Take a look at the instructions. It's detailed enough to give you a good idea what you're in for

Here's one I found:

Use at your own risk Very Happy

Case bolts are M12 10.9 standard thread, so I used 85 ft/lbs
The ring bolts are M12 12.9 fine thread, so I went with 120ft/lbs and red high-temp thread locker

With the case back together and shims providing preload, I measure 25 ft/lbs of rotational torque at the pinion.

Be sure to test the air locker to ensure it holds pressure. I twisted the square section o-ring on the first go round and it would not lock or hold pressure. So glad to figure that out before putting it all back together.

Tomorrow, I'll install the axles along with a new driveline (old one had play). Hopefully Larry the LR3 will be back on the road
