Rear Diff Swap
Can anyone help, will an approx 2010 D4 rear diff (3.54:1 D4 auto) fit a 2005 D3 (3.54:1 auto), has anyone done this?
The D4 unit appears to have some kind of harmonic damper on it but other than that look similar.
Thought it best to see if it’s been done by anyone, before I start taking bits off.

Yes, I've fitted a 2011 D4 diff to my 2007 D3 auto as above, same ratio.
It was cheaper for me to buy a used diff from a breakers than have my original diff reconditioned.

Great I thought they look the same casting shapes, I’ve got a grumbling bearing and loads of backlash and had the same idea, also quicker the swap than take off and have to rebuild the original.

They are very heavy!
There is a thread on here somewhere on removing/replacing a diff.

I replaced a rear diff last month, with exhaust in place. I will remove exhaust in future. I weighed the old diff - 48kg. They can be awkward to manouvre, being top heavy and with a round base.
Still much easier to change than front diff which is lighter (32kg) but fits in a very tight space. I made a simple tool to aid removal and refitting. I may share that in another thread.Chris
