Rear prop shaft centre bearing fail again?

42k miles since I changed it. Bought a GKN (at least that's what it was sold as), centre bearing rubber has split above the bearing.

Only noticed as I had the prop off to to the clutch last week. I'd like to have thought it'd last longer than 42k?

42k doesn't sound impressive for a drive shaft. But the top rubber is super thin stuff. Go for Sikaflex on your new one, before you install it.

Sorry to hear that. Mine went at 28k miles from new. Those sort of mileages almost make it a consumable like brakes and tyres.

Why not just take the current one off and Sikaflex it rather than replace and get the same issue ? Will keep you going for another year or so...

I think I will Sikaflex this one. The old prop had failed the centre bearing, but also the rear joint, so it wasn't worth fixing.
The joints on this new(er) prop are fine, just the rubber gone.

I haven’t checked when mine was replaced but I’ve just found out that the centre bearing on the ‘new’ one is on the way out. It seems things aren’t what they used to be.

Good gear ,like i said mine has been fixed for the last 7yrs never had another problem with it , the original rubber part seems very thin and easily torn.

i fitted one of the units from Darkside Developments - hopefully wont ever need to worry about centre bearing rubber againand if i replace the prop, can just change the centre carrier out for the DS unit too.

dont know if it is ok to put the link below (no affiliation to me)

I don't think the replacement parts are anywhere near as good as originally fitted in factory. My original prop lasted 110k miles, the replacement 'OEM GKN' part only did 42k!

Sorry to divert, but will.i.am, how do you find the Darkside unit ? Did you go for the standard or track bushes ? Can you feel any vibration, or noise with this ? TIA. Thumbs Up

I went for track just as they were supposed to be softer but i can't say i have noticed any vobration or any sort of noise other than an improvement from the noisey bearing from before.
