Rear Prop Shaft replace or Recon

So, Boris the 2011 D4 is making it difficlut to love him at the moment!

After having 2 recon turbos fitted and a number of other smaller general jobs done, I now have been told the rear prop shaft bearings have split and needs replacing.

Tbh the cost of a replacment at a local garage isnt horrific (£500) I have just called another garage to get another quote and they have just told me that it can potentially be reconditioned?

My question is, is it worth looking into getting it reconned or should I just go straight to a new one? I do use the car to tow a horse trailer so if its beneficial to go straight to a new one then Im happy to do that for peace of mind, but given ive spent nearly £4k on it over the last 2 months if there is a cheaper option that works im happy to look at that??

Get a new one. They are a weak point anyway, and there are few places that can accurately re-con one one of these.

The centre bearing is encased in rubber, it is generally that that splits. That part alone is about 50 quid.
However it is not the easiest to change and generally speaking the propshaft UJ bearings fail shortly after that.... especially if you have been driving around a while with a split centre bearing.
So nearly always the full prop is replaced, they cost around £350 for a decent one, so with fitting costs seams about right.
If it were me and i was towing horses or the tin tent i would want the peace of mind.
Some in here have repaired the split rubber using Sikaflex - basically a very hard silicone rubber out a tube that requires about a day to cure fully. That may be worth a shot if the UJ's are not worn and funds are tight.

It also depends how valuable your time is and if you can do without the car.

DIY can be done in 1-1.5 hours including all the faff of getting tools out and jacking up etc. as per most normal people.

If a proper garage charged you more than 1 hour then they're taking the mick.

A new GKN prop can be delivered to you for £330 last I checked. You might save yourself about £100 getting it reconditioned.....

I had mine reconditioned through a garage. When the centre bearing failed again the UJ turned out to be really tight and notchy also. This is why i'd only replace with new in the future, because if the UJ feel ok at the time then they wont replace them. The other end is a CV and I don't know how well they take wear?
