Rear propshaft replaced now droning at 70mph
After I recently changed my rear propshaft for GKN one as the centre bearing was non-existent, I am getting a drone when I'm on the motorway was originally about 65mph and went louder the faster I went.
I have removed the prop and refitted and the droning as reduced slightly. I've checked the wheel bearings and there is no play.
Anybody have any ideas what could be causing it or could the new prop be faulty.
Thanks

I believe it’s actually difficult to feel for play in bearings this size? You’ll only truly know if they’re worn when you pull them out.Defender 110 2.4 TDCi Utility Station Wagon.

I would think that droning would be from the centre bearing, assuming it was not there previously. Loosen it off and check alignment prior to retightening.

You don’t say if the droning was there before changing the prop shaft!- if it was it could be anything from wheel bearing to diffs or maybe tyres. I doubt it is the prop shaft, they usually cause vibrations. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

After I recently changed the prop I started get the drone, I checked all wheel bearings with no play, both front wheel bearings had be replaced earlier in the year. There was no vibration or drone prior to the change only a knock when slowing down and then accelerating, which has now stopped.
As Globetrotter448 mentioned, I will loosen the centre bearing and re-tighten. I had removed the new prop and refitted it, which did reduce the drone slightly. Hopefully I have bolted the centre bearing at slight angle.

I loosened the centre bearing and retightened. That reduced the sound again. But after about 200 miles the sound stopped, so I believe it was the new bearing just settling in.

check your back diff, it couold well be this. - I had a noise get louder and louder over the past few months and the prop felt tight so it wasn't that - the below photo is the oil from the back diff - needless to say the diff is now out and being rebuilt.
you may find that putting in a new prop has just increased the sound from a rear diff bearing travelling through your drive train as it is tight and in good condition.

I just fitted a new prop (not OEM) and got some really bad vibrations, starting from pretty low speed and increase with speed. Old prop had a worn center bearing that caused small vibrations at different speed but was just a gently buzz. This vibrations with the new prop seriously bad. What`s the problem?
Theres is only one way to mount it, no adjustments.

Sounds like you've bought a bad prop. Get an OE one from a reputable supplier.Richard

Are the flanges located correctly on the diff flanges ie no gaps between?

Yes, everything is in order. Maybe the bearing it´s rear diff bearing that sounds when the new prop is very tight. I will refit the prop center bearing and check again.
