That description sounds like a resistor for D4 lights?2006 TdV6 HSE.

Just another thought after reading another thread. I have seen a towing set advertised which features a loom to stop the fog lights being used when towing.
How would this work and can I disable it (for MOT purposes)1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch

Batfink......an earlier post by Pete K got me searching, with regard to my towpack electrics. As he said, there is a system called CANBUS which disables the car fog lights if a trailer is plugged in. This is to prevent caravanners being blinded by a red glow on the front of the caravan when fog lights are on.
So, going back to this object which I described earlier as being on the back of the lights. Some thought it was to accommodate a D4 lighting setup. But I noticed that it is only wired into the fog lights. So tomorrow I will snip it and see what happens.
Sub question....my D3 is a September 09, could this have had D4 lights from new ?
Many thanks to you all for your help in solving my problem.1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch

So, today I checked both bulbs, both are ok. Also checked the tow pack fuse which is in the nearside rear wheel arch, that fuse is ok. But still no foglights.............
How did you check the bulbs ? Aren't they red bulbs with D4 lights ?
The gold units do sound like resistors for the indicators.
Do you have a DMM / volt meter to check for voltage ?

Now that's a good thought Pete. The ones I took out were clear, probably reversing lights. This gold thing does look like an addition because I noticed some red electrical tape at each end. Will have another look tomorrow. Many thanks1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch

Just checked on a utube page. The gold thing is indeed the indicator resistor. You were right about D4 bulbs they are red by the look of it.1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch

Update. The fog lights are clear, they just fit into an internal red globe. Still no further forward, phoned a couple of tow hitch suppliers, but still can't find this relay they talk about. Giving up for the time being, it is driving me madder than usual1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch

Turns out that this is a widespread problem. Did some Googling, ended up on quite a few owners club websites, from Kia to Vauxhall. The common point is this problem of the fog lights not returning to normal once the plug is removed.
Apparently some sockets have a plunger built in to disable car lights, it often just sticks in. Others have the electrical fix, relay of some kind, which also sticks. Still looking for mine..... 1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch

So here is the solution. On the 13 pin europlug socket is a tiny plunger. It is right at the bottom, under the circle of pins. On the trailer plug is a plastic tab which connects to the plunger and disables the rear fog lights. So when the plug comes out the plunger also comes out and the fog lights work again on the tow car.....................or would if it was not stuck and full of crud. By the time It took to free it, I reckon it had been stuck in for ages. So how many MOT's did it go through with no fog lights. Thanks to all for your suggestions.1955 SWB Series 1 86 inch
