Rear Wheel Bearing

Is there a consensus about which brand of wheel bearing to use for the rear?

Timken is the obvious choice for the front, but I haven't read anything about the rear.

AF offer three types FAG £66 , NTN (OEM) £44 and 'aftermarket' £31. All three covered by the 2 year warranty.

Any preferences?

NTN and FAG quality brands. Go for NTN.

Many of the Aftermarket bearings are from China and the quality is not as good as the OEM.

Internal design, materials and grinding is not as good, and raceway profiles are often wrong. That leads to much shorter life.

Actually they are not.

The problem with cheap bearings is that they do not meet the original design criteria for the vehicle. The majority come from China, and this not the typical Pop Metric bearings for basic non safety critical applications.

The raceway designs do not meet the OE requirements.
The steel quality does not meet the OE requirements.
The sealing does not meet the OE requirements.
The grease does not meet the OE requirements.
The ball bearing quality does not meet the OE requirements.

Another worrying example of this complacency would be the Defender wheel bearing application.

How many people fit standard Timken OE bearings? How many fit standard quality manufactured bearings (NTN, Koyo, FAG, SKF, NSK, etc)
How many fit standard after market (china etc) quality bearings?

The reality is that only the OE timken bearings will just about pass the test specification for the Defender. If the vehicle is run close to, or on GWV, the NON OE bearings will suffer failure which is due to Plastic deformation of the race ways, inducing catastrophic failure leading to total failure of the bearings, especially if standard vehicle duty cycles are applied.

Basic reasons, Raceway design and roller Crowning.

It's your life, or more worrying the innocent bystander/motorist.

Also the bill for doing a job twice usually exceeds the difference in price of OE or Quality versus "Aftermarket quality"

Need to replace rear wheel bearing as it has a fair bit of movement in the wheel.
Are the Britpart or Bearmach bearings ok or best avoiding?
I realise that NTN, Timken etc are the best but they do cost a fair bit more.
Obviously may as well do both sides as will also change EPB shoes.

Been searching for a Timken rear wheel bearing, then found Disco Mikey's statement that OEM is an NTN bearing. However no obvious source for this bearing from the usual suspects. Any one found a supplier that does the OEM rear wheel bearing?

Thanks,

Adrian

Try searching for SNR bearing. They I guess to remember bought NTN. Or they merged.

I was just replacing mine with SKF, well known brand as well. € 40 a piece
