I see this is an old thread (before my time) come back to life. Many good solutions here. Another one (that I use) is when enbarking on an 'expedition', I go up to the sign guy and get some of his coreflute off cuts and cut to window size with a box cutter. A few spots of 'all clear' (clear silione) around the edges sticks it on. A blade takes it off after and a bit of metho cleans up residue.

From what I have heard, this type of stone guard works extremely well.
It is a metal frame with sunshade material on it. The material absorbs the energy of the stone and the angle then deflects the stone downwards.
