Recomendations for a reversing camera please

Hi
I am planning to install a reversing camera to my D3. I’d like to look as inconspicuous as possible and to give me a reasonable view of the towball for hitching up the caravan.
Suggestions please.

Thanks in advance,
Stu

A reasonable view of the town eh, you planning on going everywhere backwards then?

And as inconspicuous as ossicle too, nice. Laughing

Joking apart, avoid the ones that replace the number plate light. This type have a decent enough camera but because the light is so small, your number plate looks like you have a bulb out and is only half lit.
Any of the cheap eBay cameras should be ok. Get one with a seperate power cable and AV cable.
There's loads of room under the tailgate handle for drilling a hole too.

I've used one of these from Amazon fits in the blanking plate next to the number plate lamp.

Did the RR mod to the screen and the brightness fix from Forum member Panoramix

May not be so good if you want it pointing at tow ball

That depends entirely on what car spec you have, and as you can't be bothered to fill out your profile it's not really possible to advise which route to take. Rolling Eyes

If you have the factory screen in the dash you have two options, fit a GVIF unit and camera ( a search will tell you about that ) or run the screen in Range Rover mode and install and activate a camera ( link above ).
Both options work but the GVIF is probably the most functional option, sadly it is expensive.

Camera fitting guide RR Mod method

0) Turn the interior lights off, by holding down the center button until they flash

1) ensure you have a long enough cable to reach the front screen, going upwards along the headlining on the passenger side, down the windscreen pilar to the display.
On a D3 you are likely to need a longer cable.

e.g
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Auto-Car-RCA-Ph...0642.m3226

search ebay for "rca camera cable 10m" or whatever length is required e.g 15m

2) Install camera. People usually drill it into the handle above the number plate.

3) If your camera cable has a small red wire at each end use this to power the camera.
Solder (or whatever) the camera power wire to the red tail coming out of the yellow plug.
Earth the camera black wire to the number plate light black wire. (or metal)

4) Remove rear ROOF/INTERIOR light (on Disco) and drop headlining down at the back
Drop the C pillar down on the back of the car.
Run the cable through the grommet etc.
Drop the trim down by the rear doors (torx T25? under the LR badges)
Drop the trim down by the passenger seat. (I think you need to remove the lower section first) and then the top section may pull downwards.
Remove windscreen A pilar (torx T25? under the LR badges)

Once that is down you can run the cable along and down to the dash.
(If you are using a GVIF under the seat, run the cable down by the front seatbelt)

Remove trim near passenger airvent
Unclip the lower glovebox by pulling hinges sidewards/outwards

Pull cable thru from windscreen.

At this point you may wish to put some of the headlining back up and trim. Don't do it all 100% though until you have tested the camera, just enough to get rid of the bits and support the headlining!

5) Remove the display and pull the cable through
Onto the red tail out the yellow connector, connect an inline fuse with 1A or 2A fuse
Connect the other end to an ignition source (cigar lighter) or to a blue wire on the connector of the display. Whichever you feel more confident in doing.
DO NOT connect it to the reversing light wiring.

6) Connect camera to display brown connector using adaptor cable

e.g
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Rear-Camera...SwoVNaL05l

or from this sites shop
www.disco3.co.uk/shop

Plug the display in and test using the diagnostic menu

7) Assuming you haven't had the roof lights on for hours, get your IID and change the CCF setting to reverse camera fitted. (best to have a charger connected when you do this)
Now when reverse is selected the camera should automatically display. (once the RR mod has been done - Step 9)
When you come out of reverse, the display should say on for 10 seconds or so

Adjust camera once RR mod done.

8) Refit all the roof trim 100%

9) Modify your display for RR mode, by cutting a yellow wire inside and fitting a switch

10) Fitting lighting controller to ensure the display is bright enough in all conditions.
