Red Centre Trip - July 10 |
|
Anyone heading up along the Oodnadatta Track in school holidays? We have a group of 5 cars going - including two D3's (or 1 and a RRS depending on what I'm in!). Adelaide start, then via Woomera, William Creek, Oodnadatta, Coward and Dalhousie Springs etc to the Rock, the Gorges and Alice. Cant wait!
cheers

Hi Black Adelaide.
Travelled up that way Easter 2009. except we went from Oodnadatta thru th Painted Desert and vis King's Canyon, Mereenie Loop Palm Valley. A great run from there is between Hermannsberg and down the Finke Gorge to the Ernest Giles Road. At least one overnight camp - Boggy Hole is a great stop. We towed our Camp-o-matic off-road camper trailer thru it all and had no problems, although came across a couple of vehicles that were not towing and still struggling. Tyre pressures are pretty important thru Finke Gorge.
WOuld love to do your trip, the roads should be open again by then. After ll the floods the county should look sensational. No leave unfortunately:(

Just travled on the Oonadatta track, the upper section is badly washed out, the section fram William Ck to Maree is very wet , sections of bog hole, creeks up to waist hight and the road is cut by flood waters near Leigh Ck.
I got to within 40 km of Maree and had to turn back and go via Roxby Downs , hours of slow 4wd in thick clay mud.
Never the less it was fun. 8)
There has been rain all over the centre and is green every where. Also we travled from Coober Peady on the Anne Bedell and then up the Mount Davies Trail through the APY Lands and came out at the Olgers and Airs Rock , this was the best part of the trip, The Mount Davies track was very over grown and sometines hard to follow with bushes and spinefex high over the track.
In our party was one D3, two D2s one HiLux and my new Cruser all went well except for two staked tires on the LRs and runed shocks on the D3 and one D2, hell they are like a boat at sea with no shocks
The Tojo V8 Diesel is awsome no trouble keeping up with the D3 V8 petrol, a great trip in all
Cheers

Great to hear Rob - hope the track improves by 1 July, although the prospect of a little mud is appealing! How did the D3 V8 go with fuel? A little thirstier than the diesel Tojo I assume! Were the staked tyres ATR's? Just curious! The D3 used a fair bit more fuel than Tojo, Tojo averaged 17 L/100 on the hard going, I think the D3 did somewhere around 23 L/100.
The two staked tires were All Terains, the damage was to the sidewalls by sticks when haveing to drive well off the track to get through.
Other minor damage due to the track being very overgrown was lots of bush pinstriping , an easy way to make a new 4wd look used but it will polish out if I can be bothered
By July who knows what state the tracks will be like, take it as it comes thats the adventure
Also I took three fire extinguishers this time just in case the Landys spontainsly needed them
Cheers

B.S Our V8 D3 Never ever went over 14L/100 Even in City Driving. At one point we had it sitting at 9.8L/100 The Other ToJo V8's were very jealous with our fuel performance levels.
Never the less it'll be interesting to see the fuel consumption this year!
