Reliable source for replacement wheels and what to get.

So having had GG AT3s (275 45 R20 - not 40 as I first said) on my 2012 D4 HSE for a couple of sets on very muddy local roads, it appears the inside of the rims has worn down to very close to replacement level, and at the last tyre change I was advised that they'd need replacing next time.

Last week in the Outer Hebrides, I suffered an irreparable puncture, and the rim now has a ding on the inside. So, after ferry cancellations and a couple of changes of route, I gingerly set off for the 700 miles home with no spare and 4 dogs in the boot. Safe in the knowledge that, if I did get a puncture, I at least wouldn't have to take the official LR dog cage and divider to pieces on a damp Scottish roadside.

Anyway, I now have a dilemma. I hate low profile tyres - they always seem to be at significantly higher risk of damage from potholes, and anything else that can go wrong. So I'd like a smaller wheel - either 19 inch or maybe the compomotive 18s.

LR 19inch wheels seem to be fairly prevalent on eBay, but I don't want to end up buying ones with the same problem and no-one ever photographs that side. So where is the best place to buy?

And if I went for some new PD1881s, what tyres to get? 255 55 R18 seems quite limited in range.

I want 3PMS, as I live in a rural area with steep hills out of the Combe which can be a little exciting in the snow. I've been pretty happy with the AT3s but found they can aquaplane a little (so I was very cautious on the A9 on Thursday - which was exciting at times), but figure maybe that's the wider footprint as much as anything.

That said, the rim wear issue seems to mainly be GG AT related, so will probably steer away from those in the future.

Edited to add that 3 of my current tyres probably have 20,000 miles left on them, but I usually try to replace in pairs, and I'm getting to the end of my tether with 20 inch rims!

Hey, I did the cautious driving bit down the A9 on Thursday, too! Glad you made it safely south! I've seen it better...and worse! The D3 really does catch the wind, but I am up and down the A9 every week, so I know where to expect the worst cross-wind.

My D3 came with new 255/60/R18 tyres - Comforser CF1100 A/T, which have the 3PMS symbol. Yep, I had never heard of them, either, but I see that you can get them from Paddock Spares...or ASDA! They are more of an off-road tyre than I would want, but too new not to use. I am hopefully picking up a set of 17 inch wheels next week, which I will probably fit with Vredestein Quatracs, which I have a lot of faith in - both as a good winter tyre and all-rounder for the rest of the year.

I can't say I wholly trust my D3 at speed or in the wet at the moment, but until I get my suspension to stay level, it would be unfair to blame the tyres.

I was surprised how stable the car was, especially crossing Skye bridge and despite having a roof box on. Perhaps the 3 adults, 4 dogs and enough luggage for an unpredictable week in the Uists helped.

You’ve been running the wrong profiled tyres on your 20s, nearest to LR spec is 275/45/20.
Had 20s on Disco 3/4s for over 18yr (currently running GG AT3s on that size) and never had an issue.
