What is your line of work Conanius?

My reckoning is the former is the better option - work for a US firm in the UK to get yourself known.

I'd say do your homework on potential employers - do they have Brit execs in the States, indicating they do move people (look on Linkedin)?

Best of luck Thumbs Up

I work in IT Management, specifically with a specialism around IT Service Management (with all the ITIL 'stuff')

Basic terms, I make IT give the business what it needs, and help IT support teams understand these requirements and make their life easier through process streamlining etc etc...

Far too details and yawnfesting for the Disco forum... but I actually enjoy it !

I get to meet lots of people from a range of backgrounds, and genuinely help people get the job done. The sort of roles I've enjoyed most have been those where I've had the authority to actually make change happen, and not be stuck in a never ending circle of meetings/boards/reviews/strategy papers/etc to do something simple and straightforward.

So yeah... if you are in the US and want someone who can do that..... !

I know one Brit locally who was moved across by Goldman Sachs - they are expanding rapidly in SLC. Might be worth a look. Thumbs Up

I work for a US company and have twice been offered a position in the US head office. I've had to decline politely both times as my kids are both at sensitive times of their schooling.

So, yes, it does happen.

regarding the above, this is why I think *now* is the time to try living overseas. Our little one is a mere 26 days old, so once he is a bit older and we are a bit more settled (lets say 6-12 months onwards) I think my search in earnest begins.

Sounds like a good plan. We had our big move (Australia & SE Asia) a few years ago when the kids were 7 & 10. It wasn't easy, but wasn't too difficult either.

Don't underestimate the 'wife effect' though. She has to be 100% behind the move or it may well be doomed to fail. I've seen a number of marriage difficulties or failures as a result of a relocation. (The worst one was where a colleague had his wife tell him in the departure lounge at the airport that she couldn't go through with the move!).

We moved to Oz then the kids were 6 & 8 - went swimmingly. Then the move to us US when they were 8 & 10 was a whole different ballgame.

Missus hated it at first, took about 2 years to settle. We all love it now though.

To me, if you have kids, there is no ideal time to do it. There is always a milestone right around the corner you want to stay for. In my mind if you are going to do it, the sooner the better, then get on with your new life. Thumbs Up

Hi Guys

Since I started this thread I thought I should give an update.

I moved to the US last week and my finally are still in the UK but planning
to move over mid April.
Still trying to finalize major issues like schools, a family home and finding a decent pub
to watch the 6 Nations Rugby.

Plan to stay 2 years and then go home again but since it is mid feb and almost reaching 70deg
and weather back home is pants you never know we may grow to like the place!

Yes, finding that Pub will be vital, especially as it all kicks off again this Friday night!

Once pup found, will you then focus on looking for a D3? Thumbs Up

Lucky Man ... Mr. Green

Given the chance I'd move over there .... been to SC Hilton Head twice and loved the area ... Thumbs Up

Pubs all sorted down there Laughing

On a map though looks close ..... in reality 260 miles away I think and probably 6 hours driving at the slow speeds the US allow Shocked

Watch out for those State Troupers hiding in the trees .... Whistle
D4 Front upgrade/cut back wings n things 'taking a long time but getting there'.

Well I found an Irish pub OK in Charlotte - 8:30am for the Scotland match and
11:30 or so for the England - Ireland match.

Wife (who is still back in UK) however told me that finding a school for our son was a bit more important than a rugby match Evil or Very Mad so I had to go to a school open day : so pub was replaced by BBC iplayer (and proxy player to make BBC think I was in the UK Very Happy )

Kinda glad I missed the England match as being from Norn Ireland I was supporting green.

Would love to get another D3 for over here too but they are expensive compared with home
(and defenders are just silly money!)

I really would only live here if you can manage to keep UK holiday allowance - also everyone
seems to work much longer hours (but to be honest they get no more work done than back home)

But I guess drinking tea in the office out of my union jack mug and watching the 10 o'clock news
on iplayer every night is probably not the quickest way to assimilate - maybe they will fire me like poor old Piers Morgan!
