Remote Lock/Unlock

The remote lock/unlock feature on my 2006 LR3 is not working properly.
The specific issues are:

Locking
Pushing the lock button does not always lock the vehicle. When it does lock, the locking is mostly instant but a few times I have to hold the button down for up to 20 seconds. When the car does not lock, I have to open and then close any door before the remote will lock the doors.

Unlocking
Pushing the unlock button the first time usually unlocks the driver’s door. The second push of the unlock button unlocks the remaining door quickly about 90% of the time. The remaining times, I have to hold the unlock button down for close to a minute. Repeated short pushes of the unlock button do not cause the remaining doors to unlock.

This situation happens with both keys.

My LR dealer ran diagnostic on the system and could not find any error codes. In addition, the software for both the locking system and the security system is current and there are no signs of a corrupted file.

Any suggestions?

Are the batteries in the fobs getting charged whilst in the ignition? Don't know how you would check this without opening a fob up mind, but I'm sure a dealer could find out.

Does this happen when parked at just one location (such as home) or everywhere?

It may be that the fob signal is being drowned out by 'background' RF noise. For instance, some RF cordless audio headphones use the same frequency as the fobs (at least that's true here in the UK).

It doesn't even have to be the same frequency; I had a car that wouldn't unlock whilst someone was ringing my cell phone, As soon as it stopped ringing I could unlock the doors; no chance otherwise.

Basically any strong radio transmitter could be blocking the signal.

To improve the effectiveness of the fob (assuming it is working/charging) put the fob against the side of your head with your elbow stuck out so you form a ring shape like a mug handle. No really. Yes, I'm serious! This technique will usually double the range of a fob; got to be worth a shot in your case.

Transgenic tomato anyone?

Thanks for the two replies. Here is some additional information.

The dealer checked both fobs and found they were transmitting rf signals on the correct frequency.

The failure happens at random locations. The problem has occurred in my driveway, at a state park six miles from my home, at various shopping centers, and in downtown Encinitas, California.

I know this wont help your problem, but my sisters Mini will not respond to the remote when parked outside my mother-in-laws. It works everywhere else and I'm not aware of any other cars having an issue in the area.

The only thing I can think of is the TV mast some 1/4 mile away.
