Removable tow hitch - handle not turning

Evening all,

Not long had my MY10 D4 and realised the removable hitch hasn't been off the car since I've had it. I've got some replacement keys which turn the barrel but the green handle refuses to rotate.

I've covered the whole thing in WD40 but other than that, is there anything else I should be considering to free it up?

Cheers.

You are pulling it out sideways before tying to turn it down aren't you?

Yup pull it out and turn.. you'll probably find like mine it needs a tap to loosen it if it's been installed that long. I went to remove mine for the first time in months and it was stuck solid.

They do tend to stick, especially if you leave them on for a while, as simonstarskie said. Especially if it's been damp and you tend to drive in mucky areas. I was faced with having the key not even turning to start with. Had to spray some oil about copiously and leave it a bit and then some gentle hammer tapping and away it eventually came. Gave it a good clean once off. Have had it on another couple of months now, this thread has prompted me to try and take it off tomorrow.

Sure am.

Having looked into the design a bit more I think the locking pin may be seized so I've covered it all in WD40. Fingers crossed that helps.

The car is booked in with LR to have tow hitch recall assessment in a few weeks so hopefully I can get it free by then. If not, they'll have fun! 😂
