Repair sunroof seal
I have tried very hard to ensure that this is not a question that was already answered elsewhere. I know that there are multiple reasons why water ingresses via the sunroof, but I think the attached photo speaks for itself. The picture is taken from the rear of the vehicle looking forwards, so the break in the seal is at the rear of the sunroof. I tried closing the hole over with duct tape and for some time it has made a world of difference, but this is not a long term solution.
Replacing the seal will really cost a lot of money, and I have in mind just to fill using a standard black silicone sealant. Is this a bad idea and if so what else would anyone suggest please?
Many thanks!

IMO the silicone may work, although the question is how hard/soft/pliable it will be after setting, so firstly I would place a bead on a piece of wood and see how it acts after a couple of days. Also try searching for mercedes/BMW/toyota/whaterver manufacturer sunroof seals.
Good luck

I’d go to the scrap yard and find a old seal and cut 2-3”” and make good of yours by cutting the torn section out and use super glue to stick the replacement in. We do similar with window and door seals on aluminium windows where it has vulcanised rubber sealsMetal auto sump & fluid change (3 hrs)
LR door puddle projectors (10 mins)
Tinted Bonnet wind deflector (10 mins)
All Intercooler pipes and Tbolts (2hrs)
3 injectors replaced so far (30mins)
Sunroof drain pipes both sides 2.5 hrs)
Rear discs, shoes, pads, callipers, flexi hoses, rigid brake line, n/s upper hub carrier bush and rear n/s upper arm (13hrs over 2 days)

I think you could use black "SikaFlex" to fill it with. Work it in with a tooth pick or something, the SikaFlex stay pliable for years. Some people have used it on the centre prop shaft rubber bush with great success.

Length of cycle inner tube inserted and sealed with silicone It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I wouldn't trust silicon to bond properly there.
Where I would have used silicon in the past I use CT-1 now.
It is a bit spendy and is definitely not as 'squishy' as silicon but I trust it to be much more effective and permanent.
I'm an advocate of Sikaflex but I think CT-1 sits closer to what would work. I'd mask off around the area though as you don't want to be making a mess with the stuff.Black 05 TDV6 HSE Auto

JBN, personally I'd use one of Switzerland's finest exports, Sikaflex 221. It sets just like one of those seals. I have previously bought it from ebay.de. Hornbach have 1000s of Sikaflex products on the shelf, none of them called 221 though

I found and ordered Sikaflex 521 before I read your post... hopefully adequate. I will find out when it arrives on Monday - the spec sheets for 221 and 521 seem close enough to a complete layman!

Thanks everyone, I applied the sealant but could not do it as thoroughly as needed because I did not have a sealant gun at the time, not to mention it was a roadside job. Result was a reduction but not good enough. Now that we have proper sunshine I have reapplied it properly and it is currently drying and curing. Not a work of beauty but I might cover with black duct tape afterwards and anyway it is rarely visible,
I think the seal around the sunroof panel should simply be replaced - can anyone kindly point me in the direction of part numbers and an idea of the complexity please. I am up to any simple jobs within reason and that expressly do not require dismantling of the roof mechanism or the internal headliner.
Vehicle is LR3 HSE 2009; many thanks.

Thanks to all for the suggestions.
Resealing did not make a difference, and I took the car to a reliable bodyshop to ask for a quote to replace the seal. They are thorough, and reckon they may have found the problem - nothing to do with the sunroof and everything to do with a possible missing cover on some kind of air intake behind the glovebox, since this is apparently the source of the water ingress.
I attach a photo of where they think there is a missing cover - can anyone help to identify this please? I am trying the workshop manual and Haynes but did not yet figure out what it is. Once I know what is missing I can order a replacement, either from Land Rover in Switzerland or someone like Bearmach.
How come it's missing? The bodyshop think that the windscreen replacement guys took it off and forgot it. No way I can know, but if this is the root cause then I will be happy just to have it sorted.
Thanks in anticipation.

I don't think it's a missing cover but many have used a plastic lid to cover over that gap and it does stop the pollen filter from getting wet ( I think that's correct ) and from there, water entering the cabin.
