When to replace brake pads

My D4 has done 35,000 miles. Dealer hasn't said the pads need changed during the recent service but I'm thinking that after 35,000 miles it should need new pads soon. Are there any tell tales or limits on the pads? It's stopping just fine at the moment.

Cheers

visually check how much pad is there left if more then 5 mm you still got some life in them
3 mm is the limit i would not go below and besides they are cheap and easy to do DIY
cheers

I've just had my 32,000 miles service and the dealer estimated 50% pad wear left! Shocked
(I suppose it depends on how much stopping you do?)

Just coming upto my 32K service and the pads look like they will need doing.

I've been told by an 'Indy' that on a D4 to always do the disc themselves as well as new pads regardless of lip size on the metal
-never heard this before and it makes replacing pads very expensive (£680) Sad

Not just BS but pricey too - £680 to supply & replace disks & pads all round.

TLO might like to let us know what current prices from him are - I bought the lot on the last Group Buy & so far only used the front pads - 42,000 miles.

I did the front pads and discs in my D3 last weekend. Froze my Censored off as it took an age to get the caliper carrier bolts undone. Apparently they are torqued up to 275Nm! My wrench only goes up to 210Nm and I didn't hear it click so I hope the litte blighters don't comer undone. Its impossible to get enough force on the wrench when you're laying on your back with the D3 on axle stands. Otherwise its an easy job and the difference is startling Very Happy EBC pads and Brembo discs £200 all in...and back ache

Unusual wear pattern?

I would have expected fronts to wear out much more quickly than rears - any idea why?

Yes, I detected a distinct countryside aroma too -also told that only genuine L/R brake parts are available for the D4 which a quick peek on ebay shows plainly aint true.

Shame really as was willing to try him as a TFC replacement

I always ask that if

the pads wont make the next service ...change them
the only time I didnt do this I wrecked a disc on my 1st Disco 1
so what I may have saved was vaporised in having to get a new disc...the ultimate false economy

This might help, new brakes & an upgrade to V8:-

I had advisories from stealer that I needed new pads at the front for 2 years before they were changed.

I always insist on having replaced parts returned.

All the milages above seem very good IMO and appear to be much higher than on D3s including discs as no one has commented on worn D4 discs, does his mean the D4 brakes are more efficient than on D3s, if so it has to be a big plus for upgrading the D3 brakes to D4 spec when they are ready for changing usually around the <30k mark paricularly he front.
