Replaced coolant expansion tank and car failed on highway
OK so had the coolant sensor fault on the expansion tank and did the replacement today.
Unfortunately allot of coolant came out in the process falling over what would seem to be the alternator / aircon unit?
Anyhow, after the re-re all was fine car drove fine for about 20 miles and then motor died completely - not mechanical dead - electrical dead. Came to a stop ignition turns on. As soon as you try and crank the car there is the slightest of clicks and then almost as if there is a short as all the electrics then reboot. Its almost as if the starter motor is shorting out - but would have expected the starter motor to be further back in the engine bay - also why would a shorted starter motor kill the car while driving on the highway?
Battery is perfect - I thought maybe alternator got wet was not charging and battery drained to nothing and car died - but nope battery is in good health.
I ran a quick scan of codes on the car and there was some issue on a "current control module" - cant recall exactly what - but sounds like it could be the issue.

... brace for this as there are a few...

So looks like a comms short / module failure to me?
I'd hazard a guess all the U codes are, as you thought, a loss of electrics. Can you clear all faults and see which come back?.

One interesting thing is the car went on a relatively steep uphill before this happened - and from the sounds of things water could have traveled rearwards on the car and settled on one or other control module... some suggest the transfer case control module? This can short out a few things.
There was one comment by an aussie on another forum who had his car in deep water and had almost the exact same error faults appear after driving uphill soon after being in deep water ... he ended up needing an engine rebuild.
The coolant is also poor at evaporating so may take some time before we get a good sense of what the story is. Maybe Ill park a heater under the engine for a bit - coolant rather poor at evaporating.
I'll try resetting all codes and see how I get on.

Codes on main page don't clear .... Guess will have to call RCV or dealer. Ouch.

So .. Jardine says motor is gone.
Said motor does not turn over and metal in oil pan etc... need new motor and Turbo's.
Odd as I managed to turn it over by hand and temps never went high either.
Interesting they say I need a new motor and not even considering having the existing one rebuilt.
LR4 with 80k miles.
Any bright ideas here? Clearly not plugging in a brand new engine

im afraid I was suspecting such . Jardine im sure are just using the terminology of new engine as JLR only fit remanufactured short blocks when the crank goes ,it will be likely to be around £13.5k if they are doing it and possibly more if not billing it to JLR, have heard up to 17k with turbos . Sorry to say at that age you will need to consider if its worth the cost even a good independent and you need a good one wont leave much left out of £10k for that job.
For what its worth temps wont have gone up as that is typical of a broken crank.

Engine pulled apart and we have ?
Two melted pistons.
On firewall side of the motor.
Any thoughts on what is salvageable / repairable?

Melted pistons can be caused by either faulty fuel injectors (whoever does the work, make sure the injectors are properly tested) or the piston cooling spray jets are blocked. Have also seen this from being mis- fuelled.Joe

I think I botched the coolant res re-re - did not bleed coolant adequality is my guess..... Pistons overheated and ... on same end of the engine seems coincidence for fuelling - more likely a trapped air methinks
