Short answer: you need to replace like with like
Long answer: it is possible to replace the LR HSE stereo system with a third party but it has caveats that do not meet the restriction you imposed when asking the question a forum search will (should) lead you to an insanely long thread on the topic

Thanks for that. I figured it was either impossible or difficult or would have caveats, but I hoped someone would pipe up and say buy a ????? Head unit and loom and happy days.
The title of my post should change. To ‘best way to get Apple play in to the standard system?’

Is Apple play a real requirement or would streaming audio be sufficient for your use case?
I mean it’s significantly cheaper and easier to do the following:
- nav: mount your iPhone on a brodit telephone mount, power from 12V socket in the console. Use Apple/google maps or Waze
- music: ACM kit + a BT to old style iPad module, alternatively BT to aux module, alternatively a device which does BT phone calls and BT streaming audio and sits on the MOST bus
