Replacement suggestion for LR driving lights?

The driving lights which came with the D3 I picked up a month back do work, but it's more of a token gesture than useable output and I caould see condensation and lack of mirroring on the reflector (does that make it an absorber..?). So I set about tidying them up yesterday.

As the pics show, one side has been sealed with silicone - which clearly didn't work too well given the amount of corrosion - and the other has a gasket which is falling to bits.

I'm going to try in the first instance to renovate them, which leaves two questions.
1) Any suggestions on a replacement gasket?
2) What could be a viable alternative, given I already have the mounting plate?

It's the HSE so the Xenons are already good enough for normal use, so the idea is just to return the lights to use and not leave gaping holes in the bumper.

Last option is I just get some KC Daylighter covers and hide the mess 8)

I have the same problem except mine are mounted on the front A frame - you can see in my gallery.

I too have noticed no real benefit and have considered upgrading them with these:

I don't think they look as good though but then I won't be able to see them from the driver's seat!

As a side question (or should it be a back question?) - how do you get on with the ladder at the rear? Having moved from a D2 to a D3 I miss being able to stand on the spare tyre to clamber onto the roof.

I've seen two types of ladder; mounted left or right. Any comments? Having a single hanging point from the top would make mw think it's prone to flexing / twisting - does it?

If you think you ever want a spare wheel carrier - mount the ladder left because the carriers tend to be mounted right.

Front runner (I have one) and Prospeed ladders mount left and are quite sturdy. I should probably lose “some” weight but the ladder and door are still fine Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green Laughing

Re Rear Ladder, it did occur to me that to have the ladder on the right would preclude a spare wheel carrier.

Side note: I don't actually know that it would as by looking at pics on the web, I can't convince myself they would foul each other but I assume they would knowing all about Murphy and his law. In any event, it would make the ladder more difficult to use anyway.

But for my use case, I would want the wheel on the roof as I will be carrying cycles on the carrier mounted on the tow bar. Given I will use the cycles more than I will the spare, it makes sense to have them more readily accessible. I'm not even sure I would want to carry two spares anyway, but a clamp for the prospeed roof rack is much cheaper than a swingaway wheel carrier. Not to mention the inconvenience when opening the boot.

As for the single mounting point at the top, it's fine. Good surface area ensures no wobble!!

[These are the driving lights you want. You can also get them in 7". Had them fitted to my D3 for a number of years now and they are like daylight. The same as the ARB intensity lights but much cheaper.

Thanks Ivan - they look pretty awesome - are they legal? Wink

Lead time might be interesting - as is shipping from US, but I might have a look around to see what else is available a bit closer to home.

Here you go these are from the UK. There are others with lesser wattage. Mine are 170W from memory and are plenty bright enough. Add a swicth inside the car and they are for offroad use only Whistle

I was thinking about this exact thing.
I too have the LR ones fitted, and the output of them is really disappointing.
Finding just better bulbs might not give the desired outcome, as reflectors and lens have a major impact.
Replacing the whole unit is an option, BUT here everything has to be inspected and approved on the local MOT equivalent - so changing the whole unit would be an expensive process.

My last thoughts were - measure inside space, try to find some drop in replacements that will replace light and reflectors.

Also saw these... and considered just getting a set but the cost is a bit more than I want - OSRAM MX180-CB

Not sure what the rules in Spain/Canarias are but here the combined reference value must be 100 or less. The D3 lights state that their reference value is 25 (for long beam) each. The Osrams are also 25 so at least here H7s and two MX180-CBS would be allowed to be on simultaneously. Also they’re ECE rated so they’re road legal from that standpoint, too.
