Replacing Front Fog Lamps With Driving/Spot Lamps

Hi Chaps,

I was wondering...
Has anyone replaced the front fog lamps with a more powerful LED driving lamp or spot lamp?

Given that the front fogs are about the same height as normal car headlamps I think it would be worth doing. Obviously they would need to be re-wired to come on with the main beam instead of the fog light switch.

I never use front fogs anyway as I think they are useless on any car!

It will not impact the MOT as front fogs are not a legal requirement.

Just trying to keep the car looking standard while improving night-time driving out here in the sticks without having to add light-bars etc.

Your thoughts, as always, would be appreciated. Thumbs Up

I fitted these in my D3 https://www.powerfuluk.com/collections/dis...iscovery-3

Not exactly the driving light you were looking for but certainly modernise the front end with the DRLs, the fog unit is fairly good as well so may meet what you need ?

I put Osram Night breaker lamps in and its made a massive difference, just need to put front fogs on or could rewire them.

Yeah I have been on their site and saw those.
I assume your headlight and fog light DRLs are all on together. Does it not look like Blackpool illuminations? Laughing
I'd be interested in a pic if you have one. Thumbs Up

Just DRLs when normal driving, they dim when headlights come on (also dim with indicators) , you can have fog lights and headlights on together but would be rarely.

Can’t find the photo with all on together but this is just the DRLs

Just to pick up on the "foglights are useless" bit... I've always found that foglights have a wider beam than the headlights and are really good for picking out deer that are close to the road at night. Especially in these places where the road is slightly above the surrounding terrain - the deer look up as they see and hear the car approaching and the lights refelect from their eyes. I guess extra lights on a light bar might achieve the same thing, but the low position of the foglights really seems to help.

And as for DRLs, running with the vehicle in "Scandinavian" mode is a good alternative.

I guess you dont feel the need for effective fog lights as replacing them with high powered brighter beams makes driving in fog a lot worse. There are plenty of upgrade bulbs available that improve the normal lights no end . I too use night breakers and they made a huge difference. I guess a lot depends what your original lights are ? Generally I would say that the fog light height would not be suitable for more long range bulbs.

I have fitted air cooled LED"s in place of the low powered halogen bulbs, switched through the main beam of the xenons via a relay so that they only come on with full beam about 5 years ago, not had any problems and still work good.
The rear cooling fan on the LEDS must be short or they will foul on the washer bottle.

It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

Also picking up the useless aspect of fog lights.

True fog always is about 12-18in above the ground, below that height the air is actually clear. I didn't see a great use for them until I was told to turn off the headlamps.

With the headlamps on in a particularly heavy fog visibility was about 2-3 yards. Headlights off so only sides and fogs and the fog dissappeared, literally. It was only the other cars on the road that made me see the fog.

True we didn't start hareing around but it certainly made for more comfortable driving.
A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.

Yeah, perhaps 'useless' was too strong a word to use.

I do know how to use them (headlamps off) and living where I do I have plenty of opportunity.
I find that I usually flick between low beam and fogs to see which is best for that particular situation and usually it's the low beam that I stick with.

I’ve gone in the other direction. We get a lot of fog. As I’ve done on the other cars, I have replaced the bulbs with yellow fog lamp bulbs. The visibility is improved, at least for me.

Yellow always is superior in fog . Everybody gets excited about LED but they are totally hopeless.
