Resetting MPG indicator

This might seem like a daft question but can the MPG be reset? I’m not the first owner of my car and am looking for an indication of how I am doing and stopping short of creating a spreadsheet, which seems like too much work, I don’t really have a clue.

Currently I am showing at 23.9mpg and that is running round town. Also if I pout fuel in and the computer says there is a range of 10 mile, how accurate is this? As I have got in car where light goes on and says 40mile left and then when I stop at home 9mile later it says I have 46 mile in tank Thud

Can be reset, press & hold RHS indicator stalk button in mpg mode, it'll reset. Thumbs Up

Trip comp virtually always over eggs things, in my 3 x D3s between 2 and 5mpg. Just so you feel better. Rolling Eyes

You are best off using a spreadsheet or mobile 'phone app - the on board computer is not fit for purpose.

Brim the tank each time you fill, then it's a simple calculation with a spreadsheet.

I've just had a shock after my first tank brimming comparison. The MPG readout said 32mpg but my calculator said 26.3!!

It seems I'm not the only one to have an over-optimisitic on-board calculator, but I am surprised that owners accept this. I mean it does seem to be a "designed in" error, to make owners feel better but surely this is misleading - no?

It's well known here that the trip comp is usually out by 2 - 5mpg, but peeps still believe it. As for "accept this", it's just one of the foibles and it doesn't affect the car, you'd be putting in the same amount whatever it said. Waaaaaaaaay down the pecking order of things that shouldn't be accepted. Whistle

The MPG

figure is an average....
a load of numbers that are being used in the MPG computer.....i don't know the algorithm thats in there but it updates quite frequently....less than every second....its only a "weather Vane" on a windy day.
the only accurate way is brimming the tank & keeping a log..
 BREXIT - done properly.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Sorry, but I don't accept this. The vehicle is very capable of measuring both the fuel it delivers and the distance travelled along the road. These two factors are all that is needed to present a reasonably accurate measure of fuel consumption. If it was all down to averages, we would see the on-board results showing a pessimistic value as often as it shows an optimistic result but this does not seem to be the case.

It's up to each owner to decide if they are happy to wear rose tinted glasses when viewing fuel consumption but I would rather be presented with facts, or a reasonable calculation based on best endeavours. I can't help thinking that this is not the case here.
