I loved this in my M5, instant heat on a cold morning. Mind you the D3 has pretty quick defrosting thanks to Ford's heated screen which BMW could not copy as Ford had the copyright IIRC.

"Instant Heat on a Cold Morning"

Confused I am talking about using residual engine heat to warm the cars interior - there will be no residual heat in the engine first thing on a cold morning?

The BMW system used a Sodium heat store that you can re activate the next time you use the car. I believe it works like the gel hand warmers that release heat when the turn to a solid form.
