Restricted Performance

Hi all,

I'm currently in Perth, one hour into an 8 hour journey home and my D4 has just gone into limp home / restricted performance mode, with a red (not flashing) warning light.

The dealer in Perth is too busy to look at it and the warning has gone out after restarting the car.

Seeing as it's not warning me at the moment, does anyone have any thoughts as to whether it's sensible to continue driving? Worried that a breakdown recovery person will simply say there's no fault at the moment...

Cheers,
Ade

I'de drive it, ours did that, it cleared after restart, fault code suggested it was water in the diesel but it's never come back

Thanks. Going to try it. Just driven through a lot of water / snow so hoping it's just a damp sensor connector...

Any other symptoms like ABS coming on or suspension not raising?

I would check fluid levels and get some spare coolant water and oil in the boot, and see if you can find a good hill to take it up as if it’s a turbo problem it will show when you are going under load - any fluid leaks or extra noise from the cam covers to indicate a split in the plastic casings

Night be worth seeing if there is anyone nearby with an iid to check for errors recorded

Have you got tools with you?

If everything else seems fine I might be tempted myself to drive it home stopping frequently to check everything is OK

Sometimes it can be feedback from a sensor throwing up errors
 Must stop buying shiny toys....

When it illuminates, are you actually getting restricted performance? As in, is the car in limp mode?

I've returned to wait for the RAC at Tesco's.

Just plugged in my OBD2 reader and it's saying

P006A – MAP – Mass or Volume Air Flow Correlation

Hoping that's not a split manifold as thats certainly not something they'll be fixing in the supermarket car park!

Same code for my split manifold. You might be lucky and find its a split intercooler hose.

Same code for me and was a Manifold split. You can probably still drive it if you can reset the fault and go easy at least to get you home👍

The RAC chap says his diagnostics equipment is showing one MAF sensor reading very different from the other (almost zero bs 15 - not sure what units)

He's picking up a new sensor to try. Fingers crossed.

Happened to me - faulty MAF and a leaking intercooler hose joint - the latter took an age to find until Indy did a smoke test and voila!

Good luck

That's normal on the 3.0

My money is on a split manifold. Lift the engine cover, and look under the injector soundproofing

Oily residue is a good sign it's a manifold

MAF sensor swap hasn't fixed it. Sad Sounds like I'll bre recovered back to the Midlands and my local indie can look at it.

Thanks for the advice, folks. I'll update this with the final diagnosis, for reference/ info/ interest.

Get your indi to do a smoke test. If it is a split manifold, do both sides and prepare your wallet Big Cry
