Restricted Performance - No Fault Codes

Good morning wise ones.

Before my service earlier this month I had a couple of instances of restricted performance, with the red triangle) whilst towing, on my 2010 D4 with 110,000 miles.

I still can’t drive, but the driver said no loss of power. We stopped and I read the codes but nothing relating to a possible problem. Codes cleared and message gone. It returned again later in the journey, whilst also going up a hill. Codes checked and still nothing.

I was checking for any smoke during the drive but nothing, although the engine was idling for a long time at the start of the return journey (stuck in a field, rescued by a tractor and again at the home end of the drive, requiring winching out by a 90), after starting it up a while after this there lots of white/light grey smoke.

Asked for this to be looked at during the service, but three weeks on, I don’t even have the bill, much less know what was done.

Anyway, yesterday the red triangle was back (not towing) my wife was driving and this time performance was restricted. Codes checked and nothing listed (other than what’s always there (lost communication with the FBH and an issue with the amplifier, all of which work anyway)).

Cleared what was there and fine again for about 10 miles before returning, still no codes.

I wondered about a split manifold, but from searching on here, that seems to come with some muck under the engine cover, which I don’t have. Looking at the MAF sensors earlier, they seem a little dirty and I will clean them, but the one nearest the bulkhead did have a trace of oil at the bottom of the pipe.

Ultimately without any codes I’m not sure what else to try, as no obvious splits in any hoses that I could see and hopefully having only just been serviced, they would have picked those up given I said about the restricted performance issues.

As always, any ideas would be much appreciated.
 Andy

Thanks very much, sadly I had a feeling that was going to be the problem.

Thank you, that gives me something else to take a look at Thumbs Up

So far at least, cleaning the MAF sensors seems to have helped.
