Retrofitting a reversing camera

Hi folks. I'm hoping to pick up a petrol D3 in the next week or so, and would like to add a reversing camera.

What I've read on my web travels suggest that it's possible, but it needs some kind of specialist coding to activate.

The car is a 2005, and has the HK audio system with navigation.

Is it as simple as buying a camera from eBay, running some wiring to the back of the head unit, and then getting an adult to code it in? Or is there more to it?

Hello, and welcome, it would help enormously if you were to fill in your profile information (about the car firstly Very Happy ) and then the advice would be much easier to give.

The coding relates to using an IID tool (the go to device for every Land Rover owner) which is simple enough but if you don't wantt o spend £400 buying one (the best investment you will ever make while owning a Disco) then a trip to your local independant specialist may help.

Have a go with the "search" facility in the bar above and you will be astounded by the number of results Laughing

Finally, enjoy your new motor... I'm sure you'll be back soon with even more questions Laughing

Thanks for the reply. Having not actually bought the car yet, I didn't want to get ahead of myself and fill out the profile info.

Rest assured that it will be completed in due course.

I did actually try a search, but the results weren't exactly as conclusive as I'd have hoped.

Joy.

Perhaps I'll go with one of those screens that sits over the rearview mirror. I'm just a bit concerned that it will be rubbish at night.

I have fitted one to mine, there are pros and cons.

Firstly you need to activate reverse camera in the ccf using the iid tool. I don't own one, but a mate does so I have paid to have my vin added to his.

Next step is to make your screen think it is a Range Rover. There's a very compressive thread on here on how to do it, but short version is you disconnect one of two wires. Some dash is dissaembly required. This is where the pros and cons come in.

You will also need to source the correct fakra connector to plug into the back of the screen, hit your local wrecker up for that. You can also use an smb connector if you can source one. You will need to make an adaptor for the fakra lead to match whatever style connector your camera requires. Mine uses RCA connectors, it was a $10 reverse camera off ebay. Connect your custom lead to the fakra connectors on the back of the screen when you do the Range Rover mod - saves you pulling it out again...

Then you have to mount the camera. Factory mount for D4s is under the tailgate handle, and there are aftermarket cameras available to suit this, howver this is offset from centre. I wanted mine centred and mounted high for ease of hooking up trailers, so I spent some time making a custom mount on the centre brake light, which suits my needs well. Getting the cabling from there into the car sucks. A lot.

I spent probably a week (whilst in covid iso) doing mine and I'm very happy with it. The picture quality is good enough (its a cheap HD camera losing a bit of signal quality through the cabling) to still be useful at night.

In all it has cost me around $200(AUD) which includes $100ish for the vin access on the iid, and $70 to my local wrecker for 5 fakra connectors with 300mm of cable still attached to each.

You can also fit one by using a gvif unit which is mounted under the passenger seat and connects to the original satnav unit this is much easier than modding the screen . if you look in the wiki section i think theres an av mod write up which explains all. Also with gvif unit you can add other av items such as ipods front camera dvd etc.

Or fit a early D4 screen in the D3, keep the 4x4 display that way and add camera’s to suit your need… (rear or front or both)

There is a extensive topic about that mod, here…. Look for” d4 screen “

Or click here…

Should be enough for 2 nights of reading Cool

I looked at this option as it seemed to be the best, however my local wrecker wanted $1400 for a second hand D4 screen which put me off a little. If I can find one for a sensible price I will go this way.

Please fill in your profile more accurately as dollars comes in all sorts around the world, all with different rates… ( the more anonymous you present yourself, the less help you will get i tend to believe..)

D4 screens can be bought around 100 quid (gbp) normally on ebay….
