Reverse light woes

Hi all I need some knowledge on reverse lights please

When I turn my lights on, the reverse light appears to be half lit. But when I put it in reverse it doesn’t go any brighter. Only one of the 2 bulb coils lights up.

Is this a clue to any kind of problem please?

I'm guessing you have the wrong type of bulb fitted? It's should be a single filament bulb, it sounds like you have a double filament bulb as used for stop and tail fittings.

Its possible you have a bad earth at the connector and the lights are earthing through the reverse light.

Get somebody to put there foot on the brakes with the side lights fog lights and hazards all on and see if it flashes like a Disco (no pun intended)

Hi and thanks

There’s no light on the reverse when gear selected. Earth wires to left of boot are all secure and botled down!

But do the brake lights flash when everthing else is on including the hazards. It could be something as simple as a corroded plug in the back of the lights.

I really don't see how this can be anything other than an earth fault somewhere.

water in, or previously in, the connection ?

wrong bulb fitted somewhere ? the dual element bulb "live" solder lumps thus making strange connections ?

maybe an wire that looks sound being broken inside the insulation ?

if you take the light unit out and try connecting to the battery (or any 12v supply) with a couple of bits of wire, can you replicate the behaviour ?

I did have a dash camera connected to the wire. That was how I noticed it had stopped working.

However the bulb seems fine!

Connections seem fine.

I’ll see what my Autel AP diagnostic can tell me

You need to change the double filament bulb for the single filament bulb before doing anything else. You can 'borrow' the fog lamp bulb from the near side to test it.

Yes I’ve got a single filament for reverse

I’ll go back to it tomorrow day now and update. And have a quick diagnostic check later.

Thanks

Just a thought, does the reverse lamp work on the opposite side from the one you're having issues with?
