roof antenna

Hi,

my D4 currently has no antenna on the roof (just a plastic cover). I would now like to mount a combination antenna (DAB+ and GPS) here. Did anyone else do this before? How do I access the bottom so I can remove the plastic cover?

Does a shark antenna fit or does it not cover everything on the roof?

I fitted a shark fin for DAB reception.

Thought it would be a simple matter of removing the plastic blank already on the roof, but this appeared to be bonded in place.

Ended up fitting the new aerial immediately behind the plastic blank, there was just enough room, but it did involve butchering the metal inner roof panel strengthening.

I didn't want to take down the headlining, so worked with it just released from it's fixings at the rearmost edge.

Unfortunately I have sold the car, so can't get you any pictures.

I did buy a decent, as in not cheap chinese aerial, as took the view I didn't want to have to revisit the area again.

Drop the 'C' & 'D' pillar trims to allow the headlining to be lowered (but support it so it doesn't crease), as mentioned the plastic is bonded to the roof, don't use gasket remover as it will remove paint as well... Use a single-sided razor blade with lots of masking tape around the blanking panel and cut the thin foam adhesive to release the panel. I used a LR roof housing to mount the GPS & DAB antennas in, a bit tight but worked well - you don't need the LR GPS antenna, any 5V phantom powered (i.e. single coaxial connection) one will work, I used an old Garmin external antenna. Make sure the DAB antenna has a good ground plane and a good connection to the bodywork as close as possible to the antenna.
