Do the fuel consumption increase with the bikes on the roof?

It certainly doesn't improve it, when driving solo with bikes on the roof I notice the fuel drop if I drive at 70mph, at 60mph it's less noticable.
I've never checked the MPG with a caravan on the back - I just think it would be toooooooo painful Big Cry Big Cry

The Thule 591 comes with two fitting kits, one which clamps round the roof bar - this will not fit round the LR bars. The other fitting is a T bolt which slides into the LR bar (you have to remove the rubber strip). I have cut my rubber strip so that I fit the strips back in around the bike carrier to reduce the wind whistling.

emmab - the atera strada 3/4 is an expensive carrier but is excellent. It carries 3 bikes as standard and an extra rack bolts on for the fourth bike. With the fourth bike, it is recommended that you use the straps to stop it moving and these can be undone in seconds if you lower the rack and get into the boot

5 bikes and a roofbox on our D3

To avoid over stretching I put two bikes carefully covered in old blankets into the caravan and two bikes on the roof,as close to each side as the racks will allow. Bikes in the van are secured in a rack I made up that fits between the front seats and in five years of towing they have never moved and the interior of the caravan remains as new. You can use the caravan step to help get the bikes up to the roof.
