Rooftent

Hi guys,
Maybe it is a bit of silly question but, could anybody tell me how a rooftent is secured to roofrack / bar.
I am thinking about hiring one for my offroad weekend but need to find out if it is possible to fit.

Thanx, Ruud Thumbs Up

Hey

there are different types of mountings....
some do with clamps around the bars of the rack or the cross bars
others are mounted with screws directly into the RTT

usually both will work out well
either with FR rack or LR Roof Bars

Have fun
Cheers

Most roof tents use inverted U bolts which run in channels on underside of the tent.

IIRC the arms of the U are about 45 mm apart. If you have wide aero type bars then the standard type brackets may well not fit.

It is sometimes possible to adjust the bracket so that they will fit.

There are other possibilities of making them fit. Drill base of roof tent and roof bar. Or two holes per fitting and then make your own clamp.

If you have a rack made from slats you might have to change U bolts for set screws (fully threaded bolts).

If your rack has permanent luggage rails it might make use of roof tent more awkward.

Is there an issue with weight on roof tents? I.e. How small do you have to be to sleep on the roof?

Whilst I do not know the roof loading limit for a D3 or D4, for Defenders load limits are 75 or 150 kg.

Most roof tents weigh about 50-65 kg. Roof racks can weigh up to 30 kg+

So in theory it is very easy to exceed limits on Defender roofs. However this is a 'dynamic' load rating, i.e. when the vehicle is being driven. When static there is no weight limit as such
