I've recently purchased a 2006 LR3 SE 4.4ltr V8 with 17k miles on it ... it is a fantastic vehicle BUT I have a rubbing sound which I think is coming from the rear end that is quite apparent when driving on the highway (doesn't happen when stationary) ... a colleague thinks it may be the Parking Brake that needs adjustment but I would appreciate any comments / input as to what you may think the problem is (I am taking it to the dealer Saturday so would like to have an idea so I can understand their diagnosis)

Is it a metallic rubbing / rasping noise that does not change pitch ?
If so I have this - its quite quiet but getting slowly louder.
Shinymoose has a similar noise but his turns out to be his rear diff - I don't have this fitted so thats not the case on mine.
Thanks for the reply .... it's more of a deep rubbing sound which could also be a repetetive and consistent sort of thudding which is why i think it may be related to breaks or, hopefully not, bearings

May sound silly, but have you checked that the spare wheel is whinched in tightly ?
Worth a look just in case. Or a loose heat shield or even the plastic shroud thats behind the spare wheel (keeps the water and dirt away).

I know I was confused and have not been eating enough fish recently.
I get a whine at speed if I lift off... from 80 down to 70 on a private road.
Is that the kind of thing you had ??

Diff Noise
I have just had my 1st service & complained about a metallic scrapping noise. Reply was that it was the rear diff that they want to replace (17,000km). My 1st question was 'Will it be replaced with a new or reconditioned part?' Answer.... reconditioned by LR. Is this normal practice or should I insist on a brand new diff?Ren Colyn

It does seem this rear diff issue is not just little old me, although my noise is defiantly a metallic noise - I find with the MTR's fitted I can't hear it at 70mph

My Diff was diagnosed as the problem. Just had it replaced with a new diff (not re-manufactured) and the noise has gone. Hope it lasts!Ren Colyn
