Every moderating action is criticised for being immoderate by some ...so no change here then Whistle But I agree I was a little harsh to LandyLad. We are now the best of friends though and he's invited me round for Christmas Day lunch Very Happy

I've heard that he doesn't need the excuse of Christmas to 'dress-up' and entice young boys with gifts, sweets or even puppies......... Whistle Wink

Every new engine should be run in - the procedure is in the owners manual. The tighter tolerances of new engines are more reason to run them in. Have a look at the oil that comes out during the first change. Thumbs Up

Have you read that link to the boy's website? Does make a very good argument about the rings and the seal.

Just because the manufacture's hand book says bed it in gently, doesn't mean it's technically sound advice.

as I read it; it was for petrol engines and while I can see the merit of the advice, how does it compare to a diesel Question
what I find interesting is that some 3months ago I put up a question about has my new car having its engine being s Censored ed by a work staff thrashing mine to go 15-18km round trip and used enough fuel to show 100km less on the tank range. the few replies where that they hoped he hasnt done any harm etc whic is now the opposite advice we read here Shocked Question Question Question

oh well its still running so maybe a thrashing is best Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter Rolling with laughter

If you think you know better than the manufacturer in this matter, ignore their advice.

It was common practice to break in a rebuild engines under load of the big
trucks with Cummings engines. And that was back in the 80's.

Advice from an engineer

Once oil is warm trash it for short periods not for longer periods.

Do not change oil early.
If driven in to slow, turbo will consume oil.

Check Oil level!!!!!!

Check oil as i think the block absorbs some as well.

From another engineer....

New Engine
....allow it to get up to running temperature by carefull use of accelerator
...dont rev the ballcocks off it when cold (its the oil that has to get to temp to do the business in Turbo & camshafts.....the first 30 seconds of any cold start are the critical ones)
....dont let it labour in a low gear (manual gear box change up at right revs / road speed)
....dont allow it to over rev by selecting a low gear at high speed (manual selection of auto box or down change manually)
....no kick downs on Auto box
....realistic top speeds

When say over 1000 - 1500 miles
...the engine needs to be driven harder by observing all the above (no high revs when cold, right gear
& making the engine work when up to temp by harder acceleration + higher speeds

also
allowing engine to run on idle before switching it off after a run - allows turbo to cool & prevents carbonisation of oil to Turbo centre bearing.
changing oil earlier than suggested service intervals (pays dividends if the vehicle is a long term proposition)

all these affect the running & ultimate life of engine
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics

VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.
