Sacrificial rocker arm ?

Helped my mate yesterday strip his Alfa engine (1.9JTD)..... Well,I held the bits and made tea Embarassed
His belt had snapped and the engine stopped immediately.
He explained the Alfa engine has "sacrificial" rocker arms,so in the event of belt failure, the damage is very limited ......
On stripping down and taking the head off, sure enough, they had done their job with 8 snapped or fractured....
I don't venture under the bonnet,as most of what goes on under there is witchcraft to me,but it got me thinking about the obvious question...why doesn't the Discovery engine have a similar system to prevent catastrophic engine failure in the event of a belt snapping ?
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak out and remove all doubt" ?.....what rubbish...

Locking rear E-diff

Extended roof rails

Why? Because it's far more lucrative to sell a whole engine instead of a handful of rockers? Or is that me being cynical? Laughing

Or is it the difference between Italian and French engineering? The Italians know whatever they make will break, so might as well prepare for it. The French think their engineering is perfect, so why even think of the negative?
