United Kingdom 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Manual Java BlackDiscovery 3
[For Sale] 2005 Discovery 3 TDV6 S Manual - £1,400

My old Land Rover Discovery 3 TDV6S is sadly for sale. I’ve moved house and no longer have a flat driveway or a garage to work on her – plus I think she needs more time and attention than I can devote at the present time.

The car:
Reg: PY05 EEB
Engine/trans: 2.7 TDV6 Manual
Trim: S
Colour: Java Black - some scratches here and there from city/town life and the occassional lake district trip
Mileage: 135,393 – will rise as still in occasional use
MOT expiry: Jan ‘23
Location: PE10 Lincolnshire area
No. of previous owners: 4 (V5C present)
Price: £1,400

I feel lucky that in my 7-year period of ownership, I’ve only had to do the following major’ish items:

• EPB unseize and parking brake shoes + hardware: Oct/Nov ‘15
• ARB & rack bushes: Jun & Aug ‘16
• Intercooler pipe: Jan ‘16
• Replaced AC condenser (old part came out in two pieces!): Apr ‘17
• Recon alternator: Dec/Jan ‘16
• New rear upper arm solid brake hoses: Nov ‘15
• Front brake flexi hoses: Nov ‘15
• discs & pads: Nov ‘15
• Cambelt (just the belt kit, not the oil pump body as well): Aug ’15 – done by Liverpool LR Centre
• HPFP belt: It’s been done (I’m also certain that Flack did it when the rear upper arms were done) – but I can’t find a record for it.
• Replacement radiator (my fault – damaged the old unit whilst changing the alternator): Jan ‘16
• Windscreen replaced (stone damage): Nov ‘16
• Front wheel bearings: Aug & Sept ‘15
• Replacement clutch (DMF, clutch & slave cylinder): Feb ‘20
• Replaced prop shaft (knackered centre bearing): Feb ‘20
• Fuel tank cradle: Jan ‘22
• Front upper arms: these have been done (Approx 2016/2017) but I can’t find the receipt
• Front pads: Mar ‘17
• Front lower arms: Nov ‘19
• Rear Upper arms + upper rose joints: Nov ‘16 – job done by Flack
• Replacement exhaust section leading from turbo (flex section knackered on the factory one): Feb ‘20
• Water pump: Jan ’17 (LR part, after 2x aftermarket items leaked in quick succession)
• Replaced injector (Siemens part: May ’17 – job done by Flack)
• Spare wheel winch replaced: Nov ‘16

Bad bits
The fact that this is all mounting up, and I’m not in a position to fix it, is the main reason for selling. I no longer have access to facilities that I had hoped I would have – so it needs to move on to someone who can attend to the below:

• Rust. I have tried to keep on top of the car as much as possible, by periodically dropping sill covers and scooping out muck, scrubbing down and treating the inner wheel wells
(documented on this forum if you look for my posts), or scrubbing/treating the frame where I can – I suspect I didn’t get it quickly enough. The issues that I’m aware of:
a) Hole in the frame exposed when I did the fuel tank cradle change
b) OSR sill has a patch (earlier this year) – other side still good looking good, and soaked in fluid film, inside and out
c) Park brake backing plates - the outer protective plate has been cut away on both sides leaving the inner section holding the brake hardware.
d) there's a little bit of overspray on the inner wheel arches from when i was scrubbing and coating the sills with the covers off - didn't bother but mentioned for completness

• Rear suspension is tired and clonking. I suspect rear lower arms and rose joints, and/or rear ARB linkages
• One of the captive nuts on the frame for the rear ARB bush shackles had to be drilled through in order to get the bolt out – a new longer bolt and nut were used – but otherwise just to mention it
• Cruise control intermittent. I replaced the steering wheel wiring (cured intermittent SRS issue) but cruise control still problematic
• Smell of oil burning on longer/faster journeys. I thought this was spilled oil from the last engine oil spill and fill working its way down the engine, but it’s been doing it for months now. Glancing at the unions on the injector leak off hose , and I don’t see evidence of leaks – I’d characterise it as the smell of a failed rocker cover gasket, or its still engine oil spilled during the service that’s burning off – can’t be certain either way I’m afraid.
• The FBH is smokey and unreliable - so I've disconnected it. A couple of years ago, I did service it off the car and managed to coax it back to life – but it will likely need a new burner assembly this time round. I managed to damage the connector on the end of the wiring loom trying to get it off the FBH, so spliced in a new connector further up the loom to allow for ease of removal of the FBH.
• There’s a remote control FBH controller installed – but I’ve not done the best job of routing wires. It’ll come with the car but the new owner may wish to remove it.
• The intermediate shaft in the steering column is clunking and binding – an apparently common issue on earlier cars. I’ve sprayed fluid film on the u-joint to keep it moving freely – but never got round to fitting the new Britpart shaft (that will go with the car if I can locate it in the loft)
• Driver's heated seat is inpoerative - element is broken.
• EPB gives the occassional squeal if parked on a hill. It's been faultless since I unseized the module and rebuilt the parking brake mechanism on both sides of the car in late 2015 - but will need more attention relatively soon.
• Exterior tailgate button can be occassionally tempremental. I've already replaced the internal button, never got round to the external one.

Good bits
Because there are some! good things about the car, in my view:
o Two keys present – one needs a re-shell, the other already been re-shelled
o Starts, stops and goes.
o New no-name brand battery: Nov ‘20
o MOT
o AC blows really cold, last re-gassed: Nov ‘21
o Owner service history from my purchase and written in to the service booklet. Stamped services at approx. annual intervals prior to my ownership. Various items last done:
o Engine oil & filter: Nov ’21 (previous changes approx. annually regardless of mileage)
o Air filter: Nov ‘21
o Transfer case oil: Jul ‘18
o Gearbox oil: Jul ‘18
o Front diff oil: Jul ‘18
o PAS fluid: Jul ‘18
o Fuel filter: Nov ’21 (last one in Jul ’18)
o LR Document pack is present, as is a box file full of old receipts for various things on the car
o Comes with a combination fixed/removable tow bar (see pic). 2x keys present – all lubed up, but removed from the car as I don’t tow with it.

The car is not advertised anywhere else - if the advert is showing, the car is still available. Happy to answer all questions and viewings/test drives are welcome/advised. I will come back to the detail of the advert if I remember anything else that needs mentioning.

It'll get a damn good hoover, and a rinse, before it gets sold!

Any additional photos requested - let me know and I'll post them up. Thanks!

still for sale - some more pics for context:

1: hole in the frame as mentioned, discovered when I did the fuel tank cradle. The clip that goes on the frame between the square and circular holes that are meant to be there went in fine - and I changed the cradle just before moving house - so didn't have time to get the car to a welder - it was all scrubbed back then cured and coated with lanoguard before it back together:

2: OSR & NSR arches - overspray as mentioned, not factory clean, which is why i wanted to mention it:

Please look through my posts on this forum for work I did a couple of years back to strip down rear wheel wells, then clean/scrub/cure the body in those areas.

A useful post about work I did a couple of years back to protect rear wheel wells, as mentioned earlier:

One more bad point, I forgot to mention, having just took her for a drive: glovebox handle is damaged. It'll open, close and stay closed - but the handle isn't sitting right in the door.

Hello again,

Quick note to prospective buyers - that I'll be using the car this week for a 320 mile round trip to Liverpool for work on Wednesday 21st, so please factor that in to any plans for viewing.

Also - some more interior pics following a good hoover/clean up:

just found the tow hitch assembly in the shed:

2x keys present and working. The mechanism on the detachable part is free and lubed up. I don't keep this on the car as I don't normally tow with it.

Struggling to find the replacement intermediate steering column shaft - it'll be around the house somewhere.

I may be interested in this, how big a job is the steering column shaft to change?
SWMBO is needing a replacement for her Freelander 1 TD4 and i've had enough of her stealing my D4!
