Salisbury Plain
Hi All, I'm going to be on holiday not far from Salisbury Plain from the 2nd September to 9th September and fancy having a bit of day out exploring the lanes. Anybody fancy joining me? I'm a bit of a noob and could do with some company in case I get myself stuck somewhere. I was thinking Sunday 3rd September might be best but can do any day to fit in with others.
I've checked out the Wiltshire's public rights of way map and there seems to be loads of options, so much so I've no idea where to start! If anybody has any suggested routes or advice that would be great.
Russ.

Make sure you have the correct information on rights of way as they are very hot on the plain and I hear that most of the tracks that are visible may NOT be the ROWs as the Army made them?
But have fun.Series 1 V8

As above, be careful to stay on the legal rights of way.
Best hook up with someone who knows the place well and has digital mapping sat nav kit

I'm keen to go for a look round there at some point. Ideally need to find someone/people to go with who know the area. Ideally someone with a D3/D4 as I don't want to damage mine.

I'm very local and might be around on the 2nd (will have to confirm with the events coordinator). I won't claim to be an expert on the plain but I have a route or two that I have followed on another guided tour. As I understand it the basic rule with the made up (gravel) roads is that you are allowed on them as long as there are no signs or flags telling you otherwise. In my experience the flags are always up around the live firing range (north west side of the plain) and to the north of tilshead, but access further east is generally available. Some of the byways up there have been VRO'd and diverted on to the military roads and the signage for this is generally pretty good. It's worth checking to see when imber village is open as access up there is generally restricted- not necessarily a challenging off road experience but an interesting story and wander round. It's usually open over the summer for a bit.

Dr Rob - Any idea when the September SPTA newsletter comes out? There doesn't look to be anything on on the 2nd/3rd/4th September if I'm reading the August newsletter correctly.
Rob P - Great, hopefully an experienced guide will be interested soon. I've posted on the Facebook group prof pool suggested and the guys on there say they head out most weekends and are happy for newbies to tag along.
Bimblephish - Now I think about it the 2nd and the 9th probably won't be great for me as I'll have the car full of camping gear and family and have a 4 hour drive to/from home to do as well. Are you around on the 3rd?

So is anybody up for a trip over the pain next Sunday? As mentioned in my previous post I wont claim to be an expert but I do know a couple of fairly gentle routes up there and am happy to share.

I'll still be heading out on Sunday, where do you suggest we all meet up?
