Sand Monster

Bad day for the Discos today. Went to Atlantis dunes. 1 Disco3, 1 Disco2, and 6 Toyotas.
Disco2 bust a half shaft after about 30 mins. You can imagine what the Toyota boys had to say!
I was then totally humiliated in the soft sand. 2,7 tonnes of Disco 3 could not clear all the obstacles. DSC off, Sand mode -still no help. It's a freakin 4,4L V8 with loads of power, but 18" rims and 60 profile tires just don't cut it. We just can't get enough flotation.
Even the Fortuner was awesome in the sand! My mates Prado put me to shame. Embarassed

I left there with a dented ego. Never have I had to back out of any off road technical stuff. The Disco3 rules..... just not in sand....... wimpier Crying or Very sad

I feel for you brother, banter and abuse from toy-otas is bad, would have thought you had a beter chance with the lighter v8 compared to tdv6? Any way one benefit of rumours of closing Atlantis , no more abuse from toy-otas? Wink

Sand the Achilles' heel of the disco
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Atlantis Dunes

We went to atlantis as well the weekend just friday and saturday, I have 265\70R17 Maxxis fitted. I aired down to about 0.4 bar and I was actually amaized at what you can do with the Disco in sand. I cleared most obstacles with some guidance as its my first time on sand dunes. I will post some pics and vids later.

it's all about pressure - you need a huge surface area to balance 2.7 tons on the surface of sand Smile

I remember getting stuck a few times in sand even with the big 275/65-18 STT's on. in Angola I let them down to .8 on the dunes and then I had an absolute ball, but i was constantly worried about losing a sidewall.

With smaller tyres you just have more pressure on the sand, and less flotation.

Coarse sand (river sand) always gets me, and I don't know why. I buried the FFRR to its gills in the limpopo river with the MTR's on in Mozambique. It took a bunch of diggin to get out.

I hate to admit it, but I went right out and bought maxxtraxx after that experience. Bloody expensive, but fairly light and easy to toss onto the roofrack.

were they land cruisers ?

isnt the Land Cruiser about the same weight as the D3 ?

Kerb weight total maximum (kg / lb)

2720 / 5997.6

Gross vehicle weight total (kg / lb)

3300 / 7276.5

Re STTs, ive had them (and STs) for the last 5 years and they are great tyres - never used them in sand though, but great in snow, water, mud etc and very tough side walls Thumbs Up

Dunc. No they were Prados, Fortuners and Hilux's. The Prado is about 500kg lighter, and the rest probably a ton lighter! Shocked

Good luck with finding STT's . I can't confirm 100 % but have heard they have been discontinued , so maybe that's why. . I couldn't find a Bighorn that fits in 18 " Big Cry

Know why baben buried it to the gills

Laughing cause he likes to bury his right foot to the floor. Seriously though found that on the D3 V8 with 18" rims, need to take pressure down to 0.8 bar, leave the DSC alone (leave it on), low range raised suspension and drive.

I'll be interested in those Bighorns... 275\60R18 Thumbs Up . How do they fit compared to the BFG 265/65R18 's?
I am new in the Disco3 league coming from a Defender stable - but I have only run muds - STT's and BFG MT's for the last 8 years or so. Only once let me down with a side wall gash.
I received the vehicle with Wrangler MTR's on 19" rims. They are pretty shot and not convinced they are buying.

Anybody looking for 4 x 19" rims? Rolling Eyes or I may just run road tyres on them...
