Sat-Nav DVD Read Error (Fixed)

So after some years with my Sat-Nav not working, showing (DVD Read Error) Or (No DVD Disk Installed) I took the unit part to investigate further...

I found a adjustment screw that adjusts the gap between the Lens & the Disk !

This screw sets the height of the Lens "Up/Down" in relation to the Disk.

After some "really-fine" tweaking on the screw to get the gap just right so the disk could be read, the Sat-Nav started fully working again Very Happy

I guess over-time the Lens can get knock out of alignment which cause's the error's

I have attached some photos for anyone else who's Sat-Nav isn't working, is may be the fix it needs !

Nice one! I was assuming the mechanism would have to be replaced but I’ll give that a try!

If you have the unit powered-up with the disk inserted and the top-cover off, you can fine tweak the screw till it start to read correctly.

You have to find the "Sweet-spot" but you can tell by the sound/movement of the Lens when you have got it just right.

Anyone else tried this and further advice?

I read (heard?) somewhere that the "factory" discs were marginally thicker than standard (or after-market) DVD blank discs and this might assist getting a "backup" disc to work?

Can you describe more please MB and is there enough room to run it all powered up under the seat?

I followed this guide by MB today and it appears to have worked very well. Likewise, I had lived with the 'Disc Inserted is not a Map DVD' type message for a couple of years, but dislike stuff not working in the car.

Removal of the unit is easy, just move passenger seat forward and up to the max, disconnect the 3 cables at the rear of the DVD unit and remove the 4 bolts securing it to the frame. Take indoors and disassemble - 8 or so small screws on the underside. It all comes apart very easily. You can then return the bare unit to the car and plug in the cables again. There is plenty of room for this. The adjustment screw is very small and needs a fine crosshead screwdriver. I couldn't say that I could hear the lens focusing etc. but small adjustments, about 1/8th of a turn clockwise for mine was enough to restore full readability to the SatNav console.

Thanks MB for the advice. I was thinking of replacing the console with a CarPlay modern screen, but having this working and having also found out how to unlock the 4x4 info screen means it's better than when it was new! Cheers Very Happy
