SatNav - "initialising, please wait” error |
|
Hi I’m looking for some advice or suggestions regarding a satnav error that's just happened.
For some reason, during a trip at the weekend, I'd stopped and parked up for about 10 minutes. When I restarted the car the Satnav came up with the message “Satnav initialising, please wait” (it had been working fine previously). I sometimes have got this message in the past (often when it's been parked for some time), but then it initialises. On this occasion the Satnav remained with that message and didn’t initialise.
I have an IID tool but it doesn’t show any faults. I have also tried a hard reset (joining both battery leads etc) but the Satnav still shows “Satnav initialising, please wait”. I've also realised that the voice controls aren’t working now either.
I can't work out what the issue is but I wonder if perhaps the software is somehow corrupted.
Is it possible to reload the software - if so would the IDD tool be able to do that - or is it a dealer job?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

Brief update.
I contacted Pat direct, he has confirmed that the IDD tool can't update the audio system on 2012 and more recent models. It seems that all audio data / software is loaded via the USB sockets..
With a bit of internet searching I found a post from a Discovery Sport owner (with seemingly the same sat-nav system) who had the same problem. It was cured by the dealer re-loading the software.
I've booked it into the dealer but I really hope they can upload the software and don't decide it needs a new head unit!
Any alternative suggestions about how to get it working would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Paul

If it's only the SatNav not functioning I'd save the money & buy a Garmin, TomTom or the like; or Google Maps/Waze on a 'phone or better still small tablet.
Any of those will be better than the JLR SatNav & will be frequently updated without cost.

I did wonder about that but thought I’d see if it was a fairly simple (cheapish) dealer fix to get both the Satnav and voice controls working again.
If it’s a new head unit needed at £1000+ then one of the other options will be the answer!

Second hand head units are readily available on that auction site for around £150 and are easy to fit, with no requirement to code it to the vehicle - probably cheaper to try this than a "diagnosis" session at the dealer.

But why bother to diagnose or replace an outdated system, the maps for which are no longer updated. I agree one can buy "pirate" maps, but they too are vastly inferior to those offered on free smart 'phone/tablet apps, such as Google Maps, Waze etc..

Hi Paul, did the dealer sort out the sat nav? I have a similar problem but as I don't often use the navigation it is not a massive issue for me so I'm not keen to throw too much cash at the problem!
cheers

I didn’t bother taking it to the dealer in the end. All the advice was to get it sorted would be expensive at the dealer or involved fitting a used unit.
I just bought a phone mount and an add on gps aerial (to improve the GPS signal given the heated windscreen) and now use google maps.
I have to say that it works really well. I don’t miss the out of date land rover mapping at all.
