I have some time off next week and have been given a 'pass' by SWMBO that I can head off in the Disco for the week and explore Scotland (Just man and machine!). I will be travelling up to Glasgow then up the west coast, hoping to visit places like Oban, fort William and on up to the highlands, back down by Aberdeen and the east coast later in the week.
I'd be interested in knowing any 'must visit' places and also if anyone knows some good B&B's etc to stop over at. Really looking forward to it.

Get up to Fort William & keep following the coast til Cape Wrath, then across the top & down through the middle to end at Inverness. Forget the E Coast, it doesn't compare.

Pitlochry is stunning, great walks and you can even go white water rafting, canyoning or bungee jumping if you want.
Fort William and Ben Nevis are always worth a look as well, or how about dolphins at the Moray Firth or boat trip from Croabh Haven to see the Corryvechan whirlpool and scenery from the sea.
Just really depends on what you want to do.

and if you were here sunday there is a GRR at Drymen run by SLROC. You would need to join but would be worth it as you could also get up to some other runs quite quickly from Cumbria.
Hi guys, many thanks for the rapid responses from you all. I won;t be able to make it up on Sunday unfortunately, but that looks like a good event which would be worth advertising to others on here if its not on already....
I will stick to the west coast and highlands then and follow your advice, I will make a start on planning a route tomorrow so keep the suggestions coming...

Head up the Mallaig road from Ft William, follows the route of the West Highland Railway line which is documented as one of the most picturesque journeys in the world, it's a dead end unless you take the ferry to Skye but well worth the trip. Malliag is the end of the road and not worth spending any time in, IMHO.
Agree with DSL that the East is not so stunning but still worth a visit for the contrasting scenery alone. Aviemore is worth a visit as is Inverness and even Aberdeen which has a very busy and interesting harbour.
Just be aware that we're down to about 7 hours daylight just now so sightseeing will be restricted and the weather can get nasty - have fun, I'm a little envious

Stay north and west of Loch Ness, the geology is Canadian, not European - it makes the scenery where as the rest (south and west) is just high and moorlandish like Cumbria etc

Stop off in loch Caron (nr Applecross) at the bistro for great food, or the Applecross inn for good food but great location. (Also stay there ?) there's also a walled garden in Applecross with great cafe/bistro but it may not be open this time of year.
Ardachmuchan (sp?) peninsula - the most unpopulated and furthest west you can go on the uk mainland. You can do a day trip to mull too from here (via ferry to Tobermory). Or you could go to mull further south and leave to the north via ardnamurchan.
Cross to Skye via the bridge (about 30 mins south of loch Caron/ 45 mins south of the start of apple cross) and do a day on Skye, see the cullin mountains - they're 3.6 billion years old, they are extinct volcanos. So you can see the shape of, some are so worn by time they just look old! Which they are: they are some of if not THE oldest on the planet (earth being 4.6billion years old) Drop in to talisker distillery on Skye
Further north- use trip advisor to plan your restaurants in advance, there are some right dogs and some true gems!
Not much to see in Ullapool, it's a ferry/fishing town.
Lochinnver as a place that sells amazing pies, worth dropping in. The road to loch inner is good for scenery. There are two mountains that dominate the area: Canisp and sulven, both majestic in their own way!
There's a stunning white sandy beach (achmelvich) about 15 mins from lochinver that's worth a detour - get a sunny day and you'd think it was the Caribbean!
Apparently the area's geology was created by a large meteor strike way back... The geology is there for even more special than the rest of the Canadian bit
Do you geocache? If not, look it up, it will give you something to do enroute and help you learn about the local folk law.
