Foreign Lands !
I worked at Ford's research centre nr. Basildon for some years, lived amongst E.Londoners. Anyone from east of Aldgate Pump or north of Watford Gap was considered (with sparking good humour) a foreigner !!
So, in later years I've done Woking to Grantown-on-Spey in a day with tiny children - one of the GREAT strengths of these cars (D3&4) is NOT feeling knackered covering long distances in a smooth quiet roomy interior, at decent speeds with lovely music and great visibility.
One day they'll become the most respected of all the classic cars.

My best is Loret de Mar(Spain)to Nottingham in 13,5 hours in a Rover Vittess 3.5 v8 before the 70mph speed limit came into force, the M1 was empty and SWMBO was asleep It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.

I have a number of potential contenders, but one of the most memorable was Christmas Day 1988 when I did Liverpool to Lockerbie and back in a shade under three and a half hrs. My brother had written off a hire car whilst driving south (distracted by the aftermath of the bombing) and I had to go and collect him from the police station. My mother decided to come along for the ride, not realising how far it was. Just as we pulled in to the police station in Lockerbie she commented that I should speed up on the way back as she had to get the turkey out of the oven!
Another was Stirling to Southampton via Manchester airport, swapping my VW Beetle for my fathers Merc 280E whilst collecting my family enroute (who had flown back from Spain), then straight down to Southampton for my uncles funeral and then back north to Liverpool - all in the same day/night.
Heading north through Cheshire well after midnight we passed a pile-up involving at least one caravan, and surrounded by numerous police cars. Thinking the road was clear of plod I gave it some beans for the next few miles, unaware that I was being followed by a police Range Rover who had no lights on. After a few miles a close impression of the Blackpool illuminations appeared in my rearview mirror as he pulled me over (remember when the Range Rovers had dust-bin like arrays on their roof?) and advised that I had averaged well over 3-figures for the previous 4 miles We agreed a compromise at 93mph as that simplified the paperwork somewhat, and he acknowledged that I had slowed down to 90 when we passed another car!
Happy days - sadly long past as I can now afford to buy and run a car capable of such mischief rather than in the oldman's company cars!Currently 2009 Disco 3 SE, 2013 MY D4 HSE and 2016 D4 SE
Previously:

Make sure you've packed jumpers and blankets as the temps up here are very low for this time of year, barely into double digits over the weekend I want to see the sweets before I get into your windowless van... I'm not stupid!

Just remember that “wellies and snorkels” have different uses in some parts of the highlands and around Niges area Its not the height of the fall but the sudden stop at the bottom that hurts!!
