Screeching sound from the wheels - only when turning left!

If anyone knows what is causing this strange noise please let me know - I am baffled as to what is causing this.

The noise appears whenever I start turning the steering wheel to the left from the neutral position, but not when turning to the right. Also when turning the steering wheel back from a right turn, the noise only starts appearing once the steering wheel is straightened out and start turning left.

I only noticed this high-pitched screeching (consistent shrill, rather than a resonating sound) noise today when driving through a mountain road at 60kph. The cliff side was protected by a metal fence which might have helped me hear the noise - I would probably not have heard the noise if I had not had the windows down, and even then for a while I thought it was an insect or a bird sound in the background. I only cottoned on to the mechanical nature of the noise after trying out various movements with my steering wheel - so the noise was not that loud or obvious. I have also found out that at slower speed I could not hear this noise, but this may be due to the frequency of that noise being somehow conducive to me hearing the noise only at that speed, or simply that at slower speed such noise was not generated.

I hope my description makes sense - any ideas would be much appreciated!

Possibly diff related, where does the sound seem to be coming from?
Do you hear it whilst turning the wheel (something to do with the power steering) or when the wheel is already turned?
Check your tyre pressures, incorrect pressures and a big difference between sides can produce the weirdest results

I think the sound is coming from the front wheel or thereabouts. Turning the wheel per se does not make a noise - only when the wheel is turned left (relative to the straight position) , and the noise dissapears only when the wheel is turned back to the straight position from the left turn. So I discounted the power steering.

Does it stop if you touch the brakes? If so could be the pad sticking.

having been the lucky victim of both front wheel bearing failures, i would say check them.

the noises the left and right hand side made where totally different, but both bearings failed.

the RHS made a grinding and high pitch squeel when in a straight line - cornering made the noise go away. so if i swerved from left to right all was well - there was also wheel play Thumbs Up

the LHS sounded as if a stone was stuck betwenn the dust plate and the disk and also sound like the sound you make when running a stick across a metal fence - no wheel play though

bearings are £95 plus postage from TLO and next day delivery Thumbs Up altough it make a take a little longer to Japan Wink

Thanks everyone,

I have taken my car to be looked at today, and I will see what they say. I will keep you posted if it turns out to be anything out of the ordinary.

Just a status update - had my car back from the dealer today. Have had the wheels taken off and checked for wear but nothing abnormal. Brake pads had >6mm left so they were still ok. They did a test run but I doubt they managed to get up to speed (60kph) in a built up area. I guess I will just keep an eye on this and let you know again when I find something...
