So i'm a couple of hours to going to view this car. I'm getting the impression that the mileage is too high for the price. If I can get 2k taken off the price would that sweeten the deal. I've looked at most lr dealers in my area and haven't really found any d4's for less than 30k

i'm thinking if its done that amount of mileage in barely 3 yrs, then it cant of spent that long in a garage for problems right?
its just a case of me trying to get money off the price for all the work that may / may not of been carried out on it.
yes / no?

Oh it's not the one I crashed then
If you decide to go for it you need a minimum of 2K off what you have already negotiated, ideally 2.5K
Otherwise walk away, that's my advice.
It depends also what the interiors like, and the body work and paint come to mention it, and get on the floor and have a good look underneath for any grass sods or clumps of mud that could help identify future problems with EPB etc ?Only dead fish go with the Flow !
So Briss...what was the verdict?Cheers Ian

Well, i went to see the vehicle. It's bodywork was sound, no rust a few swirls in paintwork etc but nothing that made it look dated at all which i was happy about. The interior was a little bit of a let down, the center storage mechanism was broken the steering wheel was badly (worn) and one of the rear seats had something wrong with it.
A lot of cosmetic niggles on the interior but nothing major. I tested the air suspension as suggested and checked the work that had been carried out. All LR parts and labour, the rear disks had been replaced but not the front ones. Rear tyres were new but the front ones were older (is this common?). Went for a test drive and it was 'smooth' had no issues with the way it performed and the brakes were very responsive (like a new car really).
I told the dealer i would have a think about it and walked away without making an offer. I'm going to see another car this weekend...
I was definately go more prepared this time and actually print out a checklist etc and things to ask.
Interesting that interior was a bit shabby as they usually wear pretty well.
As for rear seat, seat backs should all fold flat & then drop to be level with rear load space when
you pull the strap & push the seat down. never had one go wrong but they aint cheap if a new one is needed!
Steering wheels can be replaced and were a well known weakness on the D3
Sounds like it has had quite a hard life, which centre storage do you mean?
Not sure why it has had new rear discs & not fronts as i would expect them all to have been done at that mileage. Yes fronts are bigger then rears , but 80k is at the top end of what can be expected from a set.
I did my D3 at 65k and they were well and truly ready !!
Think you did the right thing by leaving it and looking at a few more before you buy
Prices usually start to drop once winter is over Cheers Ian

TBH it could well have been a hire car for that kind of milage and explain the interior.
The D4 HSE I had from SHB i put 12k or there abouts, on it in just over 3 months. The boot was left a bit shabby as i used it to move racks worth of servers up and down the country on an almost daily basis (doncaster to crawley and back once a day for 3 weeks helped bump the miles up!)
Interiors can be easily brought up to scratch, steering wheels are about £150 IIRC, the cubby box is probably about £60 from TLO/Dan, tyres they always put the newest at the rear but paying retail you'd be looking at £300-400 for the fronts. Bushes i have no idea but lets say £500 from an indy.
Then lets add £700 for a decent warranty package, and £250 for a good detail inside and out to bring it upto scratch(no pun intended).
£150
£60
£400
£500
£700
£250
=
£2060
That is worst case scenario. Maybe worth printing off and haggling as if all the other bits check out it should be an OK car with the SDV6 engine and 6 speed box.
Also if you can check the V5 see who the last owner was and then contact them for info on it
That will quickly tell you if its a dog or not!FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner

excellent post kp, i will write all of this down and take it when i go to see my next d4 at the weekend.
What kind of mileage and i looking for before i should expect things like replaced bushes (whatever they are) and disks (35,000 miles?).
Also someone was saying that I should check to see if they need replacing (the disks that is). Is there an idiots guide to where/what i should be looking at

Bushes and discs/pads are things that really depend on use TBH.
If its done towing then its more likely to need them.
Ideally
Pads, maybe 20k front 40k rear.
Discs, 40-60k front 40-80k rear
Bushes, from what I've gleaned from the forum anything from 80k+
Best thing to do is just haggle the price down and get your own warranty with one of the reccomended ones from here, and the money you save just stick it straight into a pot, or spend some ££ and get a local sounded out Indy to go over it and that way you'll know roughly whats coming up.
If you get a 3.0 TDV6 invest in one of the ECu exchanges offered by a member or two on here or go for a remap from BAS or JE.
Maybe best to find one thats been px'd and that a dealer hasn't had time to prep and save them the time and money and fair enough you may get a scruffier car looks wise as it won't have been cleaned but will save yourself a packet and you can spend the money on the above and a days worth of detailing FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner

Personally I would up your budget slightly if you can and aim for something below 40k. Theres a grey 2010 XS for sale at the moment for £28k from a dealer in N.Ireland with only 34k miles. This is surely worth the extra budget against less than half the miles of the other car you went to see.
